Google. 260+ million searches per day. Registration to the dmoz is free. And, the other search engines seem to follow Google's lead. The only downfall is that it takes awhile to be listed once you've submitted.

Actually the best way to get into google is by having other website already listed, pointing to your new site. If the 'old' site is popular with google you might see Gbot on your new site only a couple of hours after the link went live.

Don't even bother "submitting" to Google. Just get a few links from pages that are already indexed and you'll be in a lot faster than if you submitted your URL.

The DMOZ listing can take a while, depending on the category.

One thing generally overlooked, is to submit to dirs. It has the same effect as having sites link to you as far as googs goes, and might be more effective. One site I put up recently as an exp, I just submitted to dirs and "other" ses. It was ranked first page in 2 weeks for my major kw combo.

I have a pretty good list of them at the site in my sig., on the left side. At least a half dozen of them will have you up in a day or 2 and a couple of them, in hours.
