i've been working on trying to get good quality links back to our site by means of reciprocal links as well as adding links to directories such as DMOZ, etc...
This proves to be a very time consuming exercise and i was wondering how in the world some people get 1000's of backlinks ?
did it take them years and years of manual labour or is there an easy way i'm not aware of...

thanks, i appreciate any comments

There are several ways to gain lots of inbound links quickly:

1 - Give away something of real value in exchange for a link (ebook, software program, motorcycle, beach house, just use your imagination).

2 - Write articles and allow other websites to publish them on the condition that they provide a resource box at the end of the article that contains an active link to your site. A Google search on my name (as the author) turns up hundreds of pages that link to my websites.

3 - Reciprocal linking. Yes, it works, and if done correctly 100 high quality reciprocals can be worth more than 1000 low quality ones.

4 - Offer a valuable service that requires a link back to your site (syndicated content for example).

4 - Buy links outright (paid inclusion in niche directories, etc.)

5 - Lots of other ways limited only by your imagination.

There are many ways to gain quality inbound links to your website...

Build contant that generates people linking to your site based on unique information....

Use signatures in your forum posts where you communicate.

Submit to directories or other places where your link may be copied as a resource....

Just a few....

Use signatures in your forum posts where you communicate.

I don't see adding your link to a forum being a great idea.

1. a link from a forum isn't on a relevant site to be linked from. Understandably a person wants to have an identity and be proud of their site.
2. If someone decides they want to know how you got where you are now...say #1 on the search engine, they simply read your posts with problems and solutions.

Don't get me wrong. I love these forums. I enjoy reading and posting here. Posting an url here isn't a benefit if your site should have been linked from a site having to do with "t-shirts" . Example of being in one t-shirt directory listing and 1000 posts on a forum about search engines doesn't seem to add up as relevant linking.

...a link from a forum isn't on a relevant site to be linked from.

For search engine ranking purposes, relevence is irrelevent (I guess I'm beginning to sound like a broken record).

The anchor text benefits of forum links are substantial, and you might pick up a bit of traffic to boot.

I'll definitely agree that inbound links from relevant sites are the best (if not for SEO reasons, at least for user's reasons). However a link from anywhere can't hurt your site.

It's usually accepted that google won't penalize a site for things that are beyond your control. If G penalized your site for getting off-topic (or even ffa-type) inbound links, a competitor could just spam your link all over the internet's worst off-topic sites and get you penalized.

So while it is unclear how google weighs links from irrelevant sites, It can't hurt.
