I got an email from http://top--sites.net and is only $5 a month to be listed to the left of Yahoo, MSN, Google, Go, AOL, Netscape, Lycos, AltaVista, and Excite searches by AutoSearch users in Internet Explorer's Search window. Is this a gimmick?

The first thing that comes to mind is, "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably isn't true."

I clicked on their Psychology category, since that's one thing I know something about - here's what I got:

Now, I won't say that these aren't reputable sites - but I will say that I spend a lot of time researching resources in psychology and I'v e never heard of any of these one. I might spend some time exploring that last one, but really... "be your own sex therapist" sounds a bit dodgy to me, although I think I've heard of the author strangely enough. And what does "reconnect with your hebraic roots" have to do with psychology? And what about that PageKeeper thing and dirty dishes - very strange...

$5 will get you a beer or soup and sandwich in many places... or a Happy Meal with a toy.

... and don't forget, we're talking a Happy Meal with a toy per month, with change left over for an ice cream or a turnover.

I clicked on that link I said might be interesting in the directory and it loaded inside a "top--sites" frame. I hate when that happens - For a lot less than $5 a month (how does free sound?) you can get a script to bust out of that frame.
