Sent Box and outbox

I have been having trouble sending private messages. Some messages that I send are in outbox and some in sentbox. Is there an explanation for this?
Are the mails in outbox in a queue or something?

Yes. The mails will remain there until the user they are intended for logs in and checks their messages.

Yep, it's a good way of telling whether your PM has been opened or not. If it's still showing in your Outbox, then the recipient has either not checked their messages, or they might have checked, but not actually opened and read the message.
