I understand how google PR works, and I'm looking for tips on raising it.

Anyone got any suggestions? Maybe good directories?

You need to check with your host and find out why your site is down.

I would get in all the Directories I could get in and then start trading links.

Get lots of high quality inbound links and create your own internal links by adding lots of quality content (articles, etc).

A great way to get some excellent inbound links is to write a few good articles on a topic that you know about and submit them (along with your bio and link) to other sites that offer that type of content. When they publish your articles, you get exposure in two ways:

1 - You'll be recognized as an authority on that topic (as long as the articles are interesting, uselful, and accurate), creating instant interest in clicking through to your website.

2 - Your link will likely be the only outbound link on the page (in fact you can insist on it), channeling all the available PR to YOU (except for that going to navigation links, etc).

As always, content is king when it comes to building traffic and PR. Inbound links build PR but content builds links and traffic. Content, links, and PR all "feed on" and help build each other up.

I tested PR with the online journal I keep on my site, after a friend complained that he had trouble getting found on Google. Within three days of writing a journal entry about him, his name was found - ranked number two on Google. Whereas before, neither his name or name with his occupation was found. I had done experiments previously writing reviews and once again the otherwise unknown event or actor/performer/artist wouldn't have showed up. I don't know whether it's because my site has been around a long time (almost 5 years), or that it's listed under the Google directory, or that it has a lot of reciprocal links and inbound/outbound links, or that I've contributed articles on various topics that got published elsewhere, or perhaps all of the above. I have not submitted my site or any of its pages to search engines for several years now. Any suggestions why? Anyhow, perhaps this is a service I can provide to keep my site alive and free. I'm at the moment trying to get people to review my site so I can improve it and turn my traffic into useful things that I want and need.
