I have three PCs 2 running 98 and 1 running XP. I have a linksys 4 port router that all are hooked to. All the comps have internet but not all of them can see each other on the network. The xp machine can see one of the 98 machines and that 98 machine can see everyone. I hve tried to ping each machine from all the others and no one can ping any one. I can however ping websites. I have TCP/IP and IPX/SPX NetBios installed and configued the same on each machine. I have tried to do it with NETBeui but then none of the machines could see each other. also on the router for one of the pcs that run 98 only one of the 3 lights are lit, the full/col and the 100 lights are off but they are on for the other 2 pcs. Any Ideas would be great.

Hi Trashguy & welcome to WPW! :-)

I have moved you over to IT discussion as I think you will get a better response there.

Also, here is a link regarding a similar discussion we had here a while back that may be of some use.

the one computer that only shows the one light ensure you are not using a crossove rcable these are generally yellow and 2 wires on each will be opposite when put side by side. Right now the only thing router is seeing on the 98 machine is a connection but nothing else.

For networking the easiest way is to use the microsoft network wizard as this will install on all computer the protocols required for each computer seeing each other, this MUST be run from the xp machine. You also must have the 98 users set up on the XP machine and ensure the passwords are the same. when setting up users make sure you do not give them all admin rights, make the users just users and share any printers or files if necessary to specific users.

ALso check and make sure that you have the router set up correctly with settings on the LAN IE obtain an IP address automaticaly or static ips and make sure all computers are part of the same workgroup

Hope this helps

Unless you have Novell Netware some place on the network get rid of IPX.
Then get rid of dynamic dns.
Give each computer a name, one two etc works well and give each one a fixed ip number
192.168.10.1 thru 4 subnet 255.255.255.0
create a workgroup named home on each PC
add a a common user to each PC with the same name password combination.
Then create a folder in the C:\ drive of each pc and share it.
The gateway is the ip number of the router.
This should work.

Make sure ALL Firewall's are disabled.

netman4ttm is right you don't need IPX/SPX get rid of it on all machines.

you should only have

Client for MS networks
[name goes here] network adapter
tcp/ip

Make sure you turn on printer/file shareing.

on the router don't set specific IP's that just makes a mess. Linksys 4port routers have a built in DHCP. They assign all ip's automatically. Yer getting the internet so it's working. don't break something.

Make sure that all machines are on the same workgroup. On win9x that's in the network settings. on XP it's in System.

You may have to create a user on the XP machine so the 98er's can connect. Also on the xp machine make sure file/print sharing is on.

In order for the machines to see eachother they need to have shares made to be seen.. I'm assuming you've done this.

Oh yeah.. reboot, reboot, reboot.
