For Yahoo!, you want keyword text links from other websites. And a Yahoo! Directory listing can't hurt, either.

Yahoo is pretty easy, meta and title tags, with anchor text as well...but the Overture ads really dig into the rankings. I think the paid placements right on top of your #1 or #2 ranking drops you to a 5th or 6th place, thereby making your placement much less effective.

By that you mean the sponsored listings in the colored boxes, right? Not the natural listings. True, at Yahoo, they have more paid listings (and extra padding to each) which in turn hog more vertical real estate. The searcher has to scroll below the fold to see the organic listings.

That is exactly what I mean Ronnie. Even the #1 hole on Yahoo puts you in the middle to bottom of the page depending on screen size/font. So its a lot less effective than Google. Not to mention the sponsored results blend more than Google's. But that said, it is easier to get a higher ranking in Yahoo from my experience.

I am agree with clasione. One of my site didn't get rank in Yahoo. I have link exchanging with keyword text to other sites but still i didnt get any success yet :(

A keyword text link is simply a link to your website or web page. It's different than an image link because it includes text and not an image. The search engines like text links because when people link to your website or web page the text link accurately describes your website or your web page.

Keyword text links can be internal (on your website) or external (on someone else's website). Search Engines favor external text links because they tend to have an unbiased view or your website.

I've been doing some rough research into the differences in the way in which Google on the one hand and Yahoo/MSN on the other seem to rank sites. My - far from profound, or particularly scientific - conclusion thus far is that Google values structure AND content whereas Yahoo/MSN place more emphasis on content.

I've done a semi-controlled experiment which seems to show this (though would be very interested in other viewpoints) and will write it up later this week.

Ron of course is correct slurp couldn't care less about pretty much anything at the moment and refreshing content to persuade it to visit seems pointless.

Good luck with Yahoo at the moment. Given they've got four days to get their act together they've got some work to do.

I agree totally. But, I also like the fact that I get 20 organics per page versus Google's 10.

I have had some good results in a fairly competitive search on yahoo without a directory listing.

Yahoo seems to put more emphasis on on-page factors whereas Google relies more on link popularity and anchor text. Yahoo seems to like a wide and more even optimization. Anchor text, links, and on-page factors Whereas Google puts allot more weight on link popularity.
