What is the best way to promote your site? Is it: buying traffic, CPC, opt-in lists, banners etc.
What companies are a good choice for any of the above.
Your advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

If you want instant traffic - CPC/pay-per-click like Kanoodle or Google Adwords. Opt-in lists work, but take a long time to build and the information you will provide needs to be (very) valuable. Banners IMO don't work very well - they will bring some visitors, but maybe only "window shoppers".
Banners may work better on highly targetted sites. For example if you're selling fitness equipment banners on weight loss sites will probably be a better fit.
I should also add - selecting proper keywords, site optimization for the SEs will also help you. Building your site with the right mix of keywords will help your site get into the top rankings on the SEs.
Hope that this helps.

Hi Elearning,
Thanks for the reply. What are your thoughts on buying an already established opt-in lists. There are companies that allow you to send 1 email a day for $12.00 a year. Also, how do you know what is the right mix of keywords and how do you optimize your site?

You are welcome.
I would suggest trying out different promotional methods - but tie each method to a "special offer". This way you know how effective the promotion was.
For example the opt-in list you talk about. You could offer free shipping on certain products for a certain time. The URL would point to a "special" page on your site, the only way to get this deal would be through the special page. Using your logs, you could view how many visitors came to that special page. This will tell you if it was worth to use that particular promotional strategy. Remember, you may get a lot of visitors - but no buyers.
But as I said before - visitors are good, even if they don't buy the first time they visit. They may buy the 2nd time - if they return.
With regards to SEO techniques - you should visit some of the other forums here. But here is something from a friends site:
"MetaTag Title
Should be between 6 and 12 words.
Meta Tag Description
Should be between 12 and 24 words.
Meta Tag Keywords
Should be between 0 and 48 words.
HEADING Information
Should be between 1 and 43 words.
COMMENT Information
Should be between 15 and 53 words.
Image ALT Information
Should be between 0 and 34 words.
Link Information
Should be between 12 and 137 words.
User Viewable Text
Should be between 200 and 2000 words.
Now with that said what are Meta Tag?
This is the first of several steps in order to get a top ranking
It takes a lot to get a top ranking. The first is the meta tags."
There are other things that SE's like such as certain text in H1 tags, bolded text is good etc., Check out the site that I got that information from (http://www.geeksonsteroids.com). The owner is a regular contributor to various forums here and is a moderator of one of the forums.
Take care,

The other thing that I would do is perform a search for keywords related to your industry then look at the top 10 sites and see how they've mixed keywords with their copy.
With most sites, unless they've "disabled" the right-mouse button (which is really cheesy, since you can get around this anyways) you can view the source code to the site and see what keywords they've picked and how they've woven those keywords onto the pages copy.

Mike I am not sure if you have had any replies yet. Thi sis my first participaion in this forum so I am just getting used to the layout and how it works. So bear with me.
I believe that there is no single best way to promote yourself online. You will probably need to consider all the thing you mentioned and more.
I advise that in the first instance you give some thought as to what sort of budget you have. This may change once you get some sales on board. Based on this you can start moving forward on how best to spend that budget on what will give you the best results.
A strategy or a planning document will also help you stay on track.

Hello,
I suffered a lot through my website promotion, abd i think the best thing is to have a mixed strategy of all the mentioned ways.
Also I tried a site named submitnet.net, it is an amazon.com website. It offers a 3 months free services which includes search engine optimization and listing, I think you should try it too.
