You have missed many types of music here and many different sub types i.e. Rock there is classic rock, shock rock, Grunge rock.

Also I enjoy Ethnic and Military music. These have been passed over.

I like all kinds of music, except rap and my opinion of rap is: Rap is to music what etchasketch is to art.

Josh Groban singing Alla Luce Del Sole starts everyday off perfect and yet I like the latest techno mix by Yngwie Malmsteen.

Could a computer actually predict the music we'll like based on mathematics?? Not something you normally think about, but pretty interesting anyway...

Apparently, some record labels are already using this software to predict the next big hits. Hmmmm....

Predominantly a Country Music fan, however the current country music is heavily influenced by what was Rock in the 70's!

Oddly enough my father referred to that as "Noise" (expletives deleted) at that time, much as I do now! Sorta makes you wonder where Country music might be headed.

Good musicals are not always the Broadway ones. I love "Notre Dame de Paris", the Paris performance... it is just beautiful! "Le Temps Des Cathédrales" and "Belle" are my favourites, but I love this performance as a whole.

Music hit a history high in Oz a couple of weeks ago. Every one of the top 20 were black artists. A very unusual occurrance I thought.

Wonder if they are using that software already?

VERY interesting, indeed... I would love to see it working, unfortunately this software is not avaliable for public... sad :-(

My favorite type of music, movie scores, is similar to classical sometimes. I like music that can drive emotions, and a composer like James Newton Howard can produce types and moods of music from beautiful classical baroque like "Restoration" to suspenseful, ambient pieces such as "The Sixth Sense" to fast-paced drama scores for "ER" (the series) to action scores like "Waterworld."

One of the things I like most is the variety, though - there are plenty of other artists that can stir up plenty of other emotions in different ways. For instance, Danny Elfman's score for "Edward Scissorhands" is crisp, sweet, and beautiful, while his score for "Batman" is similarly timeless - he invented it's theme that most people can instantly recognize.

And then there are composers that have consistent, distinct styles but can still produce moving music. Thomas Newman is hard to define, but after listening to one or two of his scores, just about anyone can recognize a Newman score. He composed the score for the "Shawshank Redemption" and the best way to describe it is that it can re-tell the story without you having to watch the movie. It begins with a beautiful but dreary theme that encompasses the bleak outlook of prison life, moves to a very simple, sad piano theme representing the tear-jerking, quiet suicide of an old man, and finishes out with a grandiose orchestraic anthem of renewed joy and freedom, on par with the "Hallelujah" chorus from Handel's Messiah.

I happen to like electronic music and compose some myself - http://www.mp3.com/mantatrax - funnily enough just last night I was thinking about the fact that my taste of music always differed from my friends who liked rock music better, allthough my range of taste is so wide I even played in a school rock band!! These days I like the technicality of electronic music. House music, trip-hop (nice for designing), trance and drum & bass are my favorites. I also have a great affinity for UK garage music, which is close to trip-hop in a way. Just my 2c :-)

Yep, bluegrass and country are definitely popular styles around here! (such as, any song from "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?") ;)

It's really interesting seeing the wide variety of musical tastes being expressed here. Personally, I like a little bit of everything, but I'm not much on rap or country, sorry! :P Other than that, I don't really have ONE favorite type of music -- it all just depends on my mood.

Thanx for the compliment. My fave DJs are DJ Tiesto, Ferry Corsten and then a whole array of Drum & Bass DJs. There's a great scene here in Cape Town and a good friend of mine is one of the best Drum & Bass DJs in the country. We jam together now and then and he makes some really cool stuff. It's so interesting to see whole communities who like music which I can't stand!! Ha-ha, I really dislike some country music. Recently in a music store, I saw a series of three CDs entitled, "Mullet Rock". I pointed them out to my now 18 year old son who thinks mullets are hilarious - what was interesting to me about the collection was that, without exception, every selection on those three CDs was horrible :-)

Somebody forward this to John Mullet in WPW programming... ;-)
