Those code 28s are a real pian in the ASSembly :O)

There are a few possible causes. Is it onbourd audio, or a PCI card like sounblaster?
What is the make and model of your motherboard?

I take it that you installed all your chipset drivers. It could be all sorts of conflicts, windows device manager is virtually useless.
Try do completely uninstall the multi media drivers, and when you reboot, go into BIOS and disable all the audio support, gameport and MIDI ports (for onboard, that is) and reboot like that.
Then, reverse the procedure and re enable all that stuff and see if Windows can put the drivers in properly.
If you have a PCI sound card, shut down, take it out, and reboot, then shut down and put it back in! (shades of Win98, egads!)

Also, if you can unhook from the internet while you disable your anti-virus and as many programs from starting as you can, that may help.

You may have a corrupted driver or dll somewhere.

But put what motherboard and sound card you have here, and I will see if something can be found.

(Usually XP is pretty good with drivers, but not always)

<added>
I just found ANOTHER wicked site. Here is the XP troubleshooting page fore third party driver issues:
http://www.kayodeok.btinternet.co.uk/favorites/kbwinxpthirdparty.htm

It may not have the answer for you there, but it looks like a great site for all kinds of resources - the home page is a huge list of security resources.

I forgive you Michael! :o)
Just to show I care, I've moved your post into IT Discussion where all the techies and hardware types hang out! ;o)

Good luck in solving your problem

It is onboard sound......and the make is..um...one sec not at my house at the moment but I believe it was an ASUS P4BGL-MX ...I will check again once I am home..but that sounds just about right....

See the harddrive was totally formated...and then I did a fresh install of XP...some .dll could not be installed..not sure why..perhaps my XP disc is corrupted now...hope not...

I downloaded something..um..RealTek a97 I think it was and it fixed the sound sorta...I can now turn the volume up and down and select a audio device...but it still doesn't play any sound.....

Hope this helps..Thanks,

And thanks paulhiles...I wasn't sure where to put this....I hope I can get this fixed or I will have to return it for a new comp..ugh...more work..

ahha..

Thanks.

Check the BIOS settings of the audio, make sure they are all enabled, and configured. Agree with Mik on the chipset drivers, check with Asus's web site see if there are any needed for XP. I assume all other devices in Device Manager show up normal?

If all else fails, boot off of your XP cd and wipe the drive and format it with the XP format process (unless that is how the format was orginally done). Some times if a hard drive is pre-formatted problems can arise during the install process.

One other thing (depending upon the Audio chipset/features) is there are sometimes multiple speaker outs, one is normal, one digital, sometimes there is a line-out that normal speakers won't work in. In my case I have an SB Live! and if the driver is set to digital only (which is not present on my version) one of the two speaker jacks doesn't work. So you may check your outputs and verify that something like this isn't happening.

Just went out to the Asus web site, seems that the motherboard should come with a Support CD that has drivers on it for Windows XP support. If you don't have this cd, I am sure you can download them from their site.

Audio Driver Download: http://www.asus.com/support/download/item.aspx?ModelName=P4BGL-MX&Type=All
Look for this file: alc101_wdm4010.zip

Intel Chipset Driver file (same download page as above):
inf5021003.zip

Motherboard Home:
http://usa.asus.com/prog/spec.asp?m=P4BGL-MX&langs=09

Looks like they have several Graphic drivers available, so you will need to verify if you need any of them or not. Generally it is best to use the XP provided drivers, however sometimes the vendor specific drivers are necessary, which may be the case.

Let us know how it goes.

Ok..I have downloaded all the needed the drivers and updates....I formated and installed XP three times before doing so as well..but still no sound..

Only thing now is..I can't even boot up...I keep booting to something called BootBlock Bios v1.0

and it asks me to insert the support cd and press enter...I do that and it just keeps telling me to insert and enter to boot..

I read up on it..and I have been told I need a boot disc...but..my floppy doesn't work...am I screwed..do I need to go and get my Flash Rom reprogrammed..??

Say no..please..and help me..:(

Thanks,

It appears that the boot block bios is a safety utility that keeps a minimal bios to boot from in case a bios update doesn't go as planned.

What you will need to do is hook up a floppy to the system, then obtain the bios flash utility and latest bios code from the Asus web site. Then create and autoexec.bat file that loads the Bios (the Asus site should have instructions for this) and re-flash the bios.

Honestly, if you just bought the computer, it may be best to RMA it for a new one from where you got it from. I will check a bit later and see if I can find anything on the web to give a bit more detail on how to overcome this one.
