I have had my site up since March and have so far not managed to rank anywhere for Poole Pottery which is what I specialise in I have just started to put it in my title after much research. But I still can not manage to get the rest of the bits and pieces right for the search engines I am constantly changing it but to no avail am I doing something very wrong or does it just take time. Is there any hints on what I am doing wrong as I am clearly doing something wrong please reply with any helpful hints after viewing my site above it is a antiques/collectables business.
To get a good ranking, you need to make your site important and relevant and not send poor quality signals.
Rankings = importance x relevance +/- quality signals.
Without looking at your site, this is generally what you need to do:
Importance - this is purely link popularity - its used by all search engines (Google call it PR).
Get links from as many sites as possible, but links from higher PR pages help more; so do links from pages on the same topic (themeing; TopicSensitive PR) and pages from expert/authority sites (Hilltop algo).
Relevance - you have to let the searchengines know what your site is about - the most important ways are to make sure your targeted keyword(s) is the title of the page; in the H1 tags; has the highest keyword density on the page, but still kept as low as posible; and, most importantly, they are in the anchor text of incoming links (there are lots of other 'relevancy' type optimization (eg bold, alt tags), but I do not worry about them due to the power of these 4.
Quality signals - be careful about the 'naturalness' of text (search engines are getting smarter re semantic analysis); avoid all hints/mentions that you are participating in link exchages for raking purposes (eg do not link to link exchange websites); do not link to viagara or casino sites; etc
Looking at your site, I could not tell which keyword(s) you wanted to target. Most of your anchor text of backlinks says KCSceramics international - you rank number one for that (anchor text rules).

When I first started to promote to search engines I was promoting the KCSceramics International and not the keywords Poole Pottery e.t.c I have started re-doing all of the search engines with my new title Poole Pottery and art deco but it is taking time to change. I will change the title in the html and H1 thank you for your help any other is appreciated.
