View Full Version : Are Hotmail And Yahoo! Blocking Gmail Invites?

Have you noticed any problems sending Gmail invites?

Joel Johnson created a buzz by reporting that some Gmail invites and emails aren't getting through to Hotmail users. Several reports also claim the emails aren't getting through Yahoo! Mail filters.

Paul Thurrett of WinnetMag (http://www.winnetmag.com/Article/ArticleID/43020/43020.html) reports Hotmail, which is owned by Microsoft, plans to increase its email storage to compete with the 1 Gigabite of space Google offers through its new Gmail service.

"Hotmail [may] be blocking the Gmail invitations," Johnson, editor of Gizmodo (http://www.gizmodo.com/archives/is-hotmail-blocking-gmail-invitations-015942.php), announced after a Gmail invite he'd attempted to send to a Hotmail account bounced.

Alex Nobert, a reader of Johnson's blog, also reported similar problems sending invites to Hotmail from Orkut, Google's online community. "Orkut responded that they had to work out an arrangement with Hotmail," Nobert said. "About a month later several old invites arrived at Hotmail addresses. I suspect it has to do with an unknown source domain generating too many emails to Hotmail accounts in a short span and being picked up by Hotmail spam filters."

They aren't the only ones reporting problems. WebmasterWorld member Robert Skelton reported his ISP is blocking Gmail emails "due to potential privacy and confidentiallity considerations."

Google has been widely criticized for scanning emails, which draws up privacy concerns although users agree to Gmail's terms and conditions when signing up for the free service. "We collect limited account information and store and maintain your account and email messages on our secure servers," Google admits, but maintains that all collected information will not be shared or sold without user permission.

"The biggest threat to the privacy of the person's reply is the person they send it to - not the provider," Skelton says in this WebmasterWorld thread (http://www.webmasterworld.com/forum100/11.htm).

Several reports have also accused Google's leading competitor Yahoo! of sending Gmail invites straight to the spam filter.

"It's a well known issue with Yahoo! mail that Gmail invitations are being delivered straight into that bulk folder," claims one WebHostingTalk (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/archive/thread/285326-1.html) member.

"Since a competing free email service can potentially cut into Yahoo's business, they've set up filters to make it more difficult for Gmail invitations to get to their users (or at least, that's the way it appears)," writes Greg at the Talent Show (http://www.thetalentshow.org/archives/001040.html). "As far as Yahoo is concerned, Gmail invites are spam."

Greg reported that Yahoo!, which recently increased its email storage to 100MB to compete with Google, automatically filters any email from a Gmail address that contains the body of a Gmail invite.

If you have accounts with Yahoo! and Gmail or know someone who does, you can test this theory yourself. Find out how... (http://www.thetalentshow.org/archives/001040.html)

I tested this theory and both Gmail invites and emails from Gmail accounts containing the body of Gmail invites were automatically filtered into Yahoo! Mail's "bulk mail" folder.

While privacy concerns may be getting Gmail blocked by some ISPs, Johnson personally doesn't believe Hotmail is blocking Gmail invites, although he says, "If Hotmail is blocking Gmail invites, they aren't doing it on a widespread basis."

My test invites, which were sent from my Gmail account to a Hotmail account, were successfully received - although Gmail emails to some ISPs were caught by spam filters.

Could it be that Hotmail and Yahoo are blocking emails from Google or is it just a problem with spam filters? Any thoughts?

I sent a invite to a hotmail address yesterday - got through no problems.

That was the case when I tried sending an invite to a Hotmail address, too.

I have heard the rumor that Hotmail might be "randomly" filtering the emails but I don't think this is true.

Has anyone actually encountered problems sending Gmail invites to Hotmail?

Now, Yahoo! on the other hand does seem to be automatically filtering the emails. Even in the tests I sent, the emails automatically wound up in Yahoo's bulk mail folder.

If anyone else tests this theory (http://www.thetalentshow.org/archives/001040.html) let me know if you experience different results...

I came across this discussion and remembered that a while ago I was supposed to receive an invite from a gmail user. Guess what, I did not get anything on my hotmail account!

I had someone yesterday (that's not too web savvy) tell me that the invite to their hotmail account was never delivered.

That theory holds water on my tests. I just now stumbled on this thread after finding TheTalentShow post at SlashDot. I posted my findings in a comment (http://www.thetalentshow.org/archives/001040.html#Comments) there.

I tried this test with four different mailboxes. First I sent a normal text mail from each, and they all went thru to my Yahoo mail account. No problems.

Then I sent the sample text provided by Greg. All four wound up in the Bulk Folder. I marked all as "Not Spam" and resent two more times. Each time, they wound up in the Bulk Folder.

Next I added those mailboxes to my Contacts, and resent again. Voila, they went thru to my Inbox. So I deleted the mailboxes from my Contacts and resent the mail again ... they got tossed into the Bulk Folder again.

I then tried using parts of the sample text, and they went through to the main Inbox ... all except one in which I removed the last sentence with the parenthesis. That went to the Bulk Folder as well. There may be others possibilities, but I have seen enough.

Basicly put, the only way you can get the Standard Gmail Invite text thru to a Yahoo Mail account without having it sent to the Bulk Folder is to have the originating email address of the invite in your Address Book at Yahoo. I am not sure if the same applies at HotMail.

If you do the tests and find that it does go thru, before you report "there is no problem" make sure also that you do not have the email address in your address book. This could (maybe) account for the random slide-thrus at Hotmail.

This only goes to show that Yahoo will not be of much threat to Google. If Yahoo are doing this, they have shot themselves in the foot........again.

It's no wonder they are falling from grace.

Once again, I received another Gmail Invitation in Yahoo's bulk folder. Now I'm sure the previous time was not a mistake.

i would agree with ronnie here as i believe most of us have turned the email filters on.

simply put, these filters would eventually place emails into the bulk folder if (a) the email address or domain name of the email address where the email comes from is not found in the contacts or safe list (as in the case of hotmail), or (b) as in the case of yahoo, it determines that it is possibly spam.

one way to get around this "problem" is to include the sender's gmail email address into the contacts list or safe list, and i believe, emails coming from gmail would end up in the inbox of the recpient.

regards to all,
dennis

Thanks for the advice, Ronnie! Has anyone done any further tests on this?

Interesting choice of a word -- problem. I take it that you are considering this to be a problem, and NOT a regular spam issue?

There is another thread going on here which started out about the Googlebot following people who uses the googlebar. Then the privacy issue came up, one thing led to another and we were talking about Yahoo scanning and purposely tossing Gmail invites into the bulk bin.

One person mentioned that text could be flagged as spam by anyone who uses Yahoo mail. Granted, this is true. But who would flag a Gmail invite as spam in the first place, and I think it would take more than one person to do it.

The problem I saw was that I could repeatedly hit the "this is not spam" button and it would still get tossed. If I sent any other mail text from the four mailboxes, they would all fly through to my inbox.

I think it would be wise to send an advance mail to the person that you are planning on giving the Invite to and instruct them to add your Gmail address to their Address or Contact list first, before sending the actual invite. Confirm it, then send it. If they miss the invite, then you just lost one Invite.

In the case of Hotmail, was the Gmail email address that the invite came from in the recipients Address Book (or contact list, whatever they call it there)? It would be nice to know this information, because in the case of Yahoo I found that it would toss it into the Inbox if the email address was in the address book. If not, it gets tossed into the bulk bin.

FYI, I have sent about 10 invites to people with hotmail addresses, and they all went through - although some of them did end up in the junk e-mail folder.

Keep in mind if you plan to test whether it shows up in your bulk mail folder depends on your keyword filter list, whether the name is in your address book and also what your level of Junk e-mail protection is. Under options there is a Junk E-mail filter setting that can be set to default, enhanced or Exclusive. The higher this level is set the more likely something will wind up in the junk e-mail folder.

Hey everyone, we're starting to get too many invite requests and that's not what this thread is about.

Let's get back to the topic at hand.

Thanks!

My friend invited me to join gmail and my invite never arrived in my yahoo in-box or bulk-mail.

When i queried the google accounts dept all i got was an automated reponse to say they look at each mail personally. Well I didn't get any other reply. I guess yahoo have filtered that somewhere as well.

Yahoo will put GMAIL INVITES in the bulk folder.

If you would like a GMAIL invite PM me. I currently have a few left. I'm not sure how long they will last, so if I don't have any when you PM me then I apologize.

Hi.

I came across this thread in a Google search. I've been having problems with receiving e-mail in my Yahoo Mail. G-Mail goes through only every other time or so. Usually, I just send the mail from G-Mail to my Yahoo Mail account and it never arrives - no bounced mail, no going to Bulk... Nothing.

Also, people on AOL have problems seem to have problems sending mail to my Yahoo Mail account. It usually gets bounced back to them.

My mail is nearly empty in all folders and besides that I do receive mail from other people. I tried e-mailing "Customer Support" (yeah, right) with no response back from them.

Does anyone know if Yahoo Mail has been having problems regarding loosing mail? May it be because of the upgrade? Thank you.
