Here is a new service from Google...
http://www.google.com/services/siteflavored.html

This is an extension of Google's Personalized Web Search. The categories it shows up and the <html code it generates clearly indicate the above conclusion.

Any ideas on what r the implications for a webmaster??

Getting yourself into DMOZ has just become more important.

I have to say I am quite surprised to read about this (I try to keep up!!) I can see a couple of problems, at least.

One I would say is a webmaster can write basically anything they want about the site which may or may not be accurate, depeding on the 'person'. Also, one webmaster may be a better writer than the next webmaster.

As well, how can this truely give the searcher the results they want if the webmaster can say as they please, I mean is Google going to check what they say against their site?

cbp, why do you say getting into DMOZ is more important. I know it is already important :-) but why moreso now?

Personalized search at Google is "powered" by or heavily influenced by the Google Directory (aka DMOZ). If personalized search is the "future", then getting in DMOZ is very imporant.

Thanks cbp.

As a fellow editor you would think I should know that ;-)

Yes, true indeed. Google is definitely going to check what a webmaster is going to say against their site. They already have some kind of technology in place to classify the 'subject theme' of your website. Now, it will be a bit more difficult for the webmasters to classify and identify your site more accurately. This is where importance of DMOZ listing doubles. You classify your site under 'xxx' category and if you have a listing in the same category in DMOZ / Google directory ... yes you have 'authenticated' your classification.

Does this mean the directory has a larger impact on the SERP's?

I Think I will stick with the AdSense site search. At least a chance to make some $$ along the way.

I cannot see any advantage (to Webmasters) in the flavored Search. Seems like you would be helping your site visitors locate your competitors.

Does anyone know how to have a Google site search look only in a specified folder?

Exactly. I can only see non-profits (eg library's; etc) using this.

The only advantage I see so far is that You are helping google to classify you in a certain category and at the same time you are aware of it. Provided google doesn't "directory filter" you as a spam (another filter ... lol)
