It's difficult to answer such an open ended question.

However my answer would be the shopping cart that your most comfortable with and would answer your current and future needs.

Price may not be an issue now, but you may endup with spending a lot on a shopping cart now and realize that you cannot expand or is not compatible with future platforms. Then, if you still have money and time you will need to redo your shopping cart research and also transfer all your products and web contents which can be very time consuming and/or expensive.

- To get you started with do you want ASP (microsoft platform) or PHP/perl (*nix) platform. The PHP platforms are more affordable and numerous but many like ASP/CFM

- How much support do you need to initially set up your cart. Will you customize it yourself or employ someone else.

- Will you manage the cart yourself. In this case you need to look at the cart administration and see which ones your most comfortable with.

Naturally I would recommend osCommerce Loaded because there are a lot of people who can help you with it and your not bound to any one company. However the bottom line is you need to be comfortable with it and it should work well for your business and you can spend the money on getting support and customization.

Well, there's only a million and one of them out there. Ranging from free to Thousands

The question, is... what are you planning on selling?
How many items?
Is this a service or product?
Do you have a drop-shipper or are you shipping?
What's your budget?
Do you hope to be found on search engines?
What flavour programming language?
Are you experienced with coding or do you require a point-and-click solution?

.... those are but a few

The more information you can provide, the better the answer you will get

There's a lot of smaller ones out there. A very powerful competitor was Microsoft's Commerce Server (used to be site server i think). But that's more for helpful for web programmers. Plus microsoft doesn't seem to be pushing it as much as it used to a couple years ago.
