Someone from an online discussion list I belong to was asking about average ecommerce conversion rates so I thought I would share the info I wrote to him, here with all of you at WebProWorld.

=================================

Conversion rates vary based on the market so I did some research and found this information you may find helpful. Here are some average conversion rates for different online market segments, based on this article I discovered over at Clickz.

http://www.clickz.com/experts/design/traffic/article.php/3362641

Vertical Market - Avg. Conversion Rate
Catalog - 6.1
Specialty stores - 3.9
Fashion/apparel - 2.2
Travel - 2.1
Home and furnishing - 2.0
Sport/outdoors - 1.4
Electronics - 1.1
All verticals -2.3

The article was written by Bryan Eisenberg, the guru of online conversion rates IMHO. Be sure to subscribe to their newsletter and read every word. It’s priceless! http://www.grokdotcom.com

They also have free conversion tools on their main site at: http://www.futurenowinc.com

I am not an employee or client, just an avid fan after having attended some of their online seminars. Hope many of you find this information helpful.

Bryan Eisenberg definitely has some great info to share, I could read his stuff all day.

Did you find anything about the B2B market? B2B usually has longer sales cycles and is typically difficult to pin down conversion rates. The traffic is usually a lot smaller, but my conversions for certain B2B sites tend to be like 22-47 percent--a lot different than any B2C markets.

Our customers tend to window shop for weeks, sometimes months, before making a purchase and will generally visit many, many times before doing so. If I simply take number of orders in a given week divided by number of visitors, the number would be incredably small - a tiny fraction of a percent.

Dental Plans convert at 1-5% depending on the quality of the traffic.
