Hello- I want to join BBBOnline. One of their requirements is security of information.

The only data I collect from customers is name, mailing address, and email address (phone number is optional). No credit card numbers or payment is accepted through my site. VeriSign charges $350 for a year, add that to the $650 it will cost to join the BBB and BBBOnline, and that's a serious chunk of change for a business that grossed ~$1500 last month.

Since the data I collect is not really that sensitive (could be found in a phone book) is there a way for me to add encryption to the site myself, for free, that would satisfy the requirements and also Netscape and Mozilla’s security pop-up warnings? I use Soupermail for my forms.

Thanks in advance for any replies!
-Stephen

Now that I've done some actual research, please disregard my prior question. But, would anyone be kind enough to recommend an SSL provider?

To purchase your own cert, check out http://www.ev1servers.net/english/index.asp - you can get a Geotrust or ChainedSLL from them ata pretty good price.

If you have your own server of a good hosting company, they can generate one for free. Same securit as any other but you get a popup that asks if you want to trust this certificate. Its really a matter of convenience.

I would recommend geotrust if you do want to buy one.
