I was just finally able to login to my email account on Yahoo and was greeted with a pleasant surprise 100MB of space! So what are your thoughts on the new Yahoo email?
Seems pretty much the same as the old Yahoo, but just additional space...and a little longer to load.

All of Yahoo! seems to be somewhat slow today. Wonder if if has anything to do with their announcement they are freeing up "tens of millions" of dormant e-mail names coupled with the additional space?
Personally, I like the new look and feel. But then again, I've been a fan of Yahoo! for years.

100 mb! I am sure this will give a little competition to Gmail.
Well, it is much needed relief to my Yahoo mailbox, but I really like the idea of Gmail...we'll see you wins this battle.

Agreed...it certainly would be nice if the results were updated!
On Friday I did notice that a client we signed on 2 weeks ago appeared in the #1 position for several main keyword phrases I optimized the site for. As of yesterday the results were back to where they were prior to the optimization efforts, including the old title tags and meta-tags. Double checked to see if the client uploaded the old site for some reason, but that wasn't the case. Maybe there's an update on the way!

Hi everybody,
the update is really Google-like.
For Yahoo!Plus customers, it is a limit of 2GB + no graphical ads (should give us some speed).
Good lord!

The search results do change, at least for my queries. My placement jumps around all the time based on the changes I make to my pages. What exactly do you want the search results to change to? You #1? =)

Yahoo has the best spam filter I have seen by far and now with the additional space it is a pretty robust email client.

I've been using Yahoo mail for over 5 years and this is the first real update I can remember. I did notice things were slow yesterday and there were some strange happenings, but now I don't have to clean out my inbox every week and I can attach 5 files, where I think it was 3 before. Their spam filter is very good and, so that alone keeps me there.

Seriously folks, who really cares if you have 100MB or 1000MB. What I think really matters with Gmail is that it SIMPLY WORKS BETTER.
1. You can use keyboard shortcuts to navigate around. Yes, I'm a DOS fan.
2. It stores & retrieves emails faster/easier than Outlook when sending email - this is a plus, because I don't know anyone by their email address, and the address book in Yahoo sucks.
3. It archives 'conversations' much better than any 'traditional' email system.
4. The search function is to die for. Love that!
5. The print function rules
6. replying to email is almost too intuitive
What I really hope comes out of this is that Google sells something like their search appliance, only for email, that hosting companies can use to provide web-based email for their clients. Frankly, I've hated every single web mail contraption I've ever used, save for the Lotus Notes web mail tools, which integrate nicely with your server copy, and hold your address book and calendar intact.

I was offered a GMail account, the e-mail said, because of my being a 'valued AdWords customer' :)
Unfortunately, I didn't take them up on the offer. After copy/pasting the user agreement/terms into WordPad, so I could blow up the text a bit, there were two things that turned me back ...
1. "Reserve the right to 'monitor' e-mails", to me, it read like they reserve the right to read all my e-mails. Don't get me wrong, I know that there are at least about 12 people along my e-mail's path to its intended recipient that can (and perhaps do) read my e-mails, but I don't really care to say, go ahead and read away. If its a legal thing, then by all means, read it all. Otherwise, please stay out of my e-mail, or legal could be on my side. There is still the 'expectation of privacy'. Although e-mail does pass through many hands, its still considered 'private', UNO.
2. "For personal use only" was my kicker. I e-mail my wife, and perhaps my parents once in awhile, but what do I need with 1Gb of space for that for. I'd like to use it like hotmail for my business, which for a non-spammer/fraud-type person, it's a means to help cut down on spammers and fraud-type people.

I like the new format. The 100MB of space is great.
Yahoo's bulk mail spam filter is really good. You can even opt for them to just delete it and you never have to see it. I checked it for months before I selected that option and they were always correct about spam.
I agree with GiftsForYouBiz about Gmail, and I won't be using it.

I think it's great. Any time they want to give me more goodies, I'm all for it. I look at these accounts as free storage, and nothing more. They are also still useful as throw-away accounts, lots of storage or no.
I'm still not trusting enough to put any important e-mail on someone else's server - but that's just me. G-mail is in beta after all - they could pull the plug, and then what?

I think that Google waited way too long and gave Yahoo time to react. And they are still waiting...
If I still had only 6MB I would probably switch to a new account with Google. Now with 100MB I will not even think about switching. It’s too much hassle to switch when you had the same e-mail address for a long time. From 6MB to 1000MB it would be worth switching, but now, I don’t think so.
I will probably open Gmail account, but not as a primary.

Let's see, Gmail.
I can get all my newsletters there, I get teck, WebDev, Marketting, and programming.
I can save them each into distinct folders called Label's, oh here:
Labels are like email folders, only better. By adding a label to a conversation, you get the benefits of folders. But Google takes the concept one step further. You can add multiple labels to a conversation -- something you can't do with folders. Once you've created a label, you can view all the conversations with that label by searching or by selecting the label in the navigation bar.
If you decide that you want to remove a label from a message or conversation, just follow these steps:
1. Click the label in the green 'Labels' box on the left side of your screen in which the message or conversation is categorized.
2. Select the message or conversation you would like to remove by checking the box next to the sender's name.
3. Click the 'Remove label "[label name]"' box along the top or bottom of your screen.
Any message or conversation you remove a label from remains in your inbox, or in All Mail, depending on its original location So they read my email?
They are honest about it. What, you think that someone should just GIVE YOU FOR FREE a service and then pander to your complaints???
I mean, how many archiving, organizing, sorting, searching, CMS software programs for email alone are there out there? 100's, 1000's???
Like, I can search my e-mails for articles they contained, that I only vaguely remember the details, only that they had an important article on "Foo"...using the Google search engine?
Did I hear myself say "Where you been all my life, baby?" LOL
Free? I don't care about Yahoo's shortcomings either, I like to hear what they are, and the strengths of anything, of course. But it is FREE!
I have to look at an ad or two???
At least I know where it is coming from. I trust Google and Yahoo, Far, FarFARFAR FAR more than the spam and 'untraceable ads' that I can only keep track of who is responsible with throw away accounts, uniquely addressed for each subscription, or form I ever fill out.
So, 10 Mb size for individual e-mails? I can mail videos to my family now, software to my ...everyone?lol
Did someone say "Merry Christmas?"
Hell, the socks I get at christmas, the neon green ones, even they have to be used when my grandmother comes around. (Facts have been fabricated to illustrate a point only)
Peace :O)

Having 100Mb space is indeed a welcoming news to all who are currently using Yahoo. With this increase space, we no longer worry about huge attachment with our correspondence. Indeed this is a pretty smart move to hold us back using the service.

Good on Google, they have really shaken up the world of free email accounts. If it weren't for them, Yahoo, Hotmail etc would have done zip.
I been using Gmail for about a week now and it is cool! I hope the big G wins the war and the battle.

I may as well pick up my hymnal and join the choir. I was MOST surprised, and most pleasantly so, to be greeted yesterday with the news my storage had leaped to 100 Mb. And I had 6 already, as I was a customer of Rocketmail when Yahoo bought that out some years back and not only allowed me to keep my address but also to have 6 Mb, half again as much as allowed regular Yahoo customers at the time.
However, recently I've been having some issues with the spam filters -- the praises for them in this thread somewhat throw me, though of course I'm glad for those posters the filters are working well. Anyway, I was thinking about going to the trouble to go to a paid Yahoo account then having everything auto-forwarded to my own website mailbox. But with this great storage challenge to Gmail, I ain't budging, not for now anyway.
My 2 cents on Google reading my e-mail, even with a machine only and even only to serve up relevant ads: Wrong approach with me, and, if postings around the Web are to be believed, with a LOT of other folks as well. That's going to be a really, really, really hard sell, I suspect.

Hi Edward
Are you aware that a Spam Filter also reads you mail in much the same way as google does for relevant ads? This one of the reasons I like gmail, the ads are actually of interest to me.
I would also not be suprised if Yahoo, HotMail etc have other bots scanning emails. Google have just be open and up-front.

I'm glad they did this. I use a yahoo account to forward email from my web site to it so I can pick it up from my office wehre I can't access webmail from my web site (a security problem). Since I'll be going on vacation, there was the risk of the 6MB running out soon. I already have a Gmail account and I was going to forward everything to this but now I don't have to bother changing any more. Besides Gmail has all sorts of restrictions on the types of attachments it accepts.
When's Hotmail going to do the same thing? They are sorely behind with their lousy 2 MB of space.

[color=violet]I love the new, improved Yahoo mail. I have Yahoo as my ISP mail, and I have several subaccounts, and I like being able to route my email withouot worrying about bouncing mail. It would be nice if some safelist would take Yahoo off their banned list, though.

Haha, good one.
I believe that Microsoft might increase it up to 50MB.
They are too cheap to go over it.
And again, thanks to Google we don't have to worry about limited space any more. I bet it would be the same lousy 6MB for years to come, if Google didn't come up with Gmail.

I cancelled all 10 paid accounts last night. Will save me a few hundred a year. Why pay for 50MB boxes when they're supplying 100MB free?
Now imagine if google "doesn't" release gmail and if it was all a way to cost yahoo millions.

I'll never use it. I like to have my message storage under my control and don't trust my information in the hands of a giant corporation taking care of millions of peoples' info. I've heard enough stories of lost stored internet messages (not from Yahoo, from that expensive service)and experienced it with my customers to decide to not take the chance. Hard drives and CD-R's are cheap.

I heard that Yahoo india is still showing 6 mb , is it some sort of discrimination, now people in asia are going crazy for gmail.
Google to win the competition, they need a messenger service too , like yahoo message, messenger and mail in one account serves better.

Often when someone signs up for a newsletter with an Hotmail account, it will bounce back with a "storage exceeded" message. Big hassle for editors and users alike. My guess is that M$ has their sights set elsewhere than in competing for the free e-mail users but if they don't increase the storage limits it's not likely they'll get too many new sign-ups (although what's that M$ service, Passport? - I think when you sign up for that a Hotmail needs to be associated, but I could be wrong).

Hi all...
Well you have to admit that Gmail just sounds cool! I have had yahoo email accounts since 98'nothing to write home about... outlook I like some of the features... but when EJRS.com sent me an invite to gmail I jumped on it... I had been paying for a msn account and when I started my hotty t shirt contest I had tons of people send me pictures my 10mb was gone over nite...I couldn't even open an email to delete it... I had to delete full on folders... :(( There was goodies in there that I wanted to keep...I now have a new love...it's called Gmail! I like the dos keyboard shortcuts :D the archiving is absolutely amazing... I get the WPW news letters but from time to time had to delete some of them... Never again...I haven't gotten any spam to my gmail account yet... and this is probably in part because it's brand new...but I just get tired of deleting my 300 bulk emails that are in my yahoo accounts everyday...
Now all google needs to do is make a chat client I'm not saying they need chat rooms... just like msn messenger... I like to see my emails come in "in real time" so that I can respond to clients immediately...
And if google did just do this to loose yahoo millions, that would be the biggest mistake google could make...nobody likes a bully... and the online strike back would loose google millions too... I personally would pull my adsense ads... because that's shady buisness practices...enough of a rant..
I'm off like a prom dress;)

Google has practical jokers; not Batman Jokers.
If they ever did pull the plug, I doubt their intention was to make Yahoo! lose some money. It would be more than likely that even Google, heck, even possibly M$, couldn't afford 1 GB for every internet accessible person on the face of the earth, with more to come next year!
Then there are the throwaway accounts that they'll probably have to hold onto info for a certain duration of time. Anyone want to setup another account for their newborn baby? A great place to hold all the MOVs and AVIs of the kid growing up... ;) What's that? Another baby? You got your dog a Gmail account? Some good high res photo attachments in there I bet.
I never came across the requirements/limitations on attachments. What would those might be?
And don't expect them to go away from beta anytime soon. When they bought out DejaNews, Google Groups was in beta for what seemed like forever.

I like the 100MB boxes. As others have mentioned, I no longer have to go in weekly to delete messages and sending larger attachments is better too. Never tried gmail so really don't have any comments on which is better. I have been a subscriber to yahoo for years and they have provided me with a service that is consistent and reliable. Have no reason to switch and go through the hassle of letting everyone know new address etc.

I disagree most strongly that Gmail works better than Yahoo!
Firstly, it crashed on me three times in my first use of it - and I was doing pretty simple stuff, I havent even got many addresses available in gmail yet - let alone integration with Yahoo! Messenger, AddressBook, Calendar, Briefcase, Photos, My Yahoo! etc. etc.
GMail is like re-learning my ABC after I have read the War and Peace of Mail on the Internet - it is really simple and clumsy at even the simplest stuff..
As for Gmail supposedly offering more space - Yahoo! offers 100Mb free to all members for Mail space, but they offer UNLIMITED space free for all members in photos.yahoo.com if they want to store large docs.. then there is also about 100mb in briefcase.yahoo.com for documents and 50mb in geocities for those who want a free website - the difference is that Yahoo! compartmentalises space usage better - which is good for me as it encourages me to be more organized, plus it means they dont waste as much space, cos they dont have to make huge amounts of space available to every user - most will never use it!
Sorry.. but I love Yahoo!
For anyone who doesnt know how to get to the top of Yahoo! search - you are trying to overcomplicate matters - its really simple!!
Use keywords (plural as well as singular, also use multiword phrases) often on your pages in the content
Use keywords in meta tags
Have lots of backlinks to your site
That is really all there is too it - the "problem" is that its just not as complicated as Google!! And everyone seems to expect it to be!

Personally, I don't like trial ballons (Beta versions). I declined to respond to the Google offer. I was already using Yahoo! and really don't have any issues with it. Things I want to save, I save via my e-mail client. I also don't need a search engine to sort through my e-mail.
I think Google missed out on a great opportunity. Yahoo! teamed with SBC and their DSL offerings have out-sold cable modems. At that rate they will overtake them in total users soon. Not only that, but SBC is going full speed ahead with fiber offerings with FTTP & FTTN (fiber to the premise & fiber to the node). They're talking about speeds of 16 meg.
When Google and Yahoo! parted ways, Yahoo! took off. They both have their advantages. However, with the average user using their ISP, they will default to the Yahoo! search engine. It's not who has the best product/service, but how many people use it. Remember Beta vs. VHS? Beta was technically better, but the public demanded VHS.

Dave,
I disagree that google's form of reading your email is the same as a spam filter reading your mail. The big difference I see is google will store what they have read in a database. Imagine the type of personal stats you could calculate after you have stored a years work someone’s email in you DB.
I prefer www.2cni.net for my email. some features are:
100MB space
Spam filter
Message highlighting
Message translation
Out of office messages
A Calendar
Bookmark storage
And my favorite, Got Hotmail, which allows you to get your hotmail from www.2cni.net so the tiny size of you hotmail account no longer matters because every time you login to 2cni you can have it retrieve your hotmail.

I prefer www.2cni.net for my email. some features are:
I went and signed up for an account there for a look see, but it is unable to retrieve e-mail from my hotmail account. I set it up, and asked it to retrieve. It said there was nothing, so I went to hotmail directly, and there were about 23 messages. I deleted those - all junk, and then sent myself a message to my hotmail account, and went back to 2cni.net to check my hotmail account, and nada. No joy. It still said, "You have no mail," so for me, it's not working very well, at least not that aspect, and that sounded like a pretty cool feature.
I can't see it as being useful for storage either since the "owner" points out that your e-mails are not backed up at all, so if he loses it, you lose everything. That's not nice. I wonder if the other services backup the messages? Maybe I should pop over and check that out - or if someone else knows, please speak up.
So for now, I'll stick with the bigger dogs. I thought the point of the large amount of storage was so you could keep e-mails for a long time - it's not much good though without a backup system in place.
Thanks for the tip though, and now I'm the proud owner of yet another free 100 mgs of space that I'm too chicken to use.
