In a move to counter the upcoming Google GMail public launch, Yahoo expanded their paid membership mail storage quota to a whooping 2 GB.
To quote from an email received from their support team:
“As of June 15, 2004, you'll enjoy the following benefits at no additional charge:
• Increase in your storage quota to 2GB
• No graphical ads”
Much has been said about the war between Google and Yahoo, each battling to take a larger share of the consumer market. Apparently Yahoo has perceived GMail promised 1 GB of mail storage as a winner and now is doubling the stake. I was seriously considering moving to GMail but with this move Yahoo managed to keep me as a (paid) customer. Even for non paying members, their mail disk quota has been increased 50 times reaching a whooping 100 MB. All without the Google AdWords hassle and its potential intrusion of privacy.
I wonder what the next Microsoft move is. As Google claims will be offering 1 GB of storage for free and Yahoo has already started offering 2 GB for a mere $20 per year, if Microsoft won’t respond by raising the mail quota for their Hotmail service I suspect they will loose a large share of their customers.
In the battle between giants, there’s sometimes gain for the little like us. What do you think?
