The English language is a little confusing sometimes.
Here is my question what is the difference between marketing, advertising, and promoting?

Or are they all the samething

Janeth, they are very similar, but not quite.

Marketing is pushing a concept. Your not selling a product, etc, your getting it out there. Like getting your website known all over the Internet. You are marketing it.

Advertising is promoting a tangible product. You advertise your business, product, etc. Your banner ads are advertising.

Promoting is when you popularise a product or service. For example: You offer half price web pages for a limited time to draw customers in. Your promoting your business.

I have worked in advertising & promotion, but I am still learning about effective marketing.

Thanks Cindy,
I think I understand but it is very confusing.

So advertising is selling,

marketing is branding

and

promoting is a special your running?

Does that sound right or not?

Your kind of almost there :-)

Yes...advertising is selling. If I put my ad on your website...I am selling myself.

Marketing is not so much branding. You know how you submit your site's link to search engines, etc....you are 'pushing' your business....you are marketing it.

Promoting is specials you run. But it is also other stuff you do to promote your business.

Here's an example:

You might send out brochures to businesses with a fridge magnet attached. By sending the brochures you are marketing your business...but at same time you are advertising yourself on the magnets they will stick to their fridge. By doing sending these out you have promoted yourself as a good business.

Make more sense? :-)

Janeth the English language is the hardest one in the world to understand and yet it is the most widely know one, both for the same reason. It is made up of every other language there is and is still continuing to grow and gain new words. I grew up with English as my first (and only)language and I don't consider myself to be fluent in it. Those word had me confused for some time and I would say Cindy has shed light on the definitions for me also.

Thanks Cindy,
I think you have helped both Greyhawk and myself.

I understand now but also feel like there is a thin line between each one.

Try Russian sometime, confused the hell out of me. English, like most European languages, is heavily based on Latin. I'm learning French and it is said that 70% of English is of French origins. Read some Spanish, Italian, or Portugese and you can see a lot of similarities between them.

Janeth:

English, oft spoken, complicated, seldom fully understood (myself included, lol), adulterated 'everywhere', and beautiful when applied with feeling.

There are many definitions depending on your application. For example, one man's SPAM is anothers' marketing. My interpretation would be:

Marketing - The creation of brand popularity by behavioural modification

Advertising - Any 'overt' message designed to solicit a response

Promoting - Any activity designed to favour one product over another. Requires a comparison.
