The way I deal with difficult customers is the same way I deal with regular customers. You have to understand their desire (and your leverage) is at its greatest when they contact you to build the website. You should drop whatever you are doing and have a face-to-face meeting, let them soliliquize about their dream website, and listen to them and write down everything they say. Then take them on a quick tour with music blasting to gather all the required materials: images, colors, music, written word, magazine clippings, whatever inspired them, put it in a box and take it home with you (not before getting a cheque, of course ;-)) Now quickly scan some of thier materials and mock up a web page, and phone them immediately. Yes? No? Switch colors? Green border? OK. Make the changes and phone them again. Keep doing it until they say YES!! Now quickly finish the damn thing and sell it to them within a few days. Remember you don't have much time before their desire fades. If you provide them with what they want immediately, your fame will know no bounds. Peace.

Great tips, cfortune. I haven't thought of this type of 'speed' approach before.

There's only one fatal flaw with this logic: if you're in any way like me and have clients who call constantly, dropping everything I'm doing to devote my entire staff's energy to serving one client eventually would mean we'd be dropping a new piece of work to service another new piece of work about...I dunno, every 30 minutes. And there isn't a lot that can be accomplished in 30 minutes.

This may work in the short term, but in the long term it's not a good strategy.
