Oracle leads database market share and revenue, according to a market research report done last year.

In wake of the proposed antitrust trial (http://www.sun-sentinel.com/business/local/sfl-blmoracle08jun08,0,3212718.story?coll=sfla-business-headlines) an article from News.com (http://news.com.com/Market+research+gives+Oracle+top+database+spot/2100-7343_3-5227856.html?tag=nefd.top) reports:

The report, published by research company IDC on Friday, found that Oracle's share grew 8.6 percent, giving the company nearly 40 percent of the market for relational and object-relational database management systems. IBM's share grew 5.5 percent to 31 percent of the total market, while Microsoft's share grew 14.7 percent to represent 12.1 percent of the database market.

That all seems very strange to me.

Personally, I dont know any organisation that doesnt use either MS SQL, mySQL or Access (oh, and one obscure client who uses Act).

I have used Oracle in the past, but only through my University years where I was primed in SQL. It seems to me that the educational organisations use what is perceived in the IT profession as leading technology, but when you actually get out to industry, these are not the most common choices.

How many of you out there use Oracle?

I work in the UK, perhaps Oracle's market share is predominately US based.
