Does an international search engine such as France Yahoo only do a search within their country? Our company ranks high in the U.S., but when I did a search on France's, we didn't even show up. Do I need to find a hosting server company in France to host our site to be able to rank in that country? Also, do I need to buy a domain name with an '.fr'?

Most international search engines have as default an option to perform local/regional/language searches. Yahoo France is one of them--their default search does French-language searches by default. However, there is a radio button control which allows the searcher to change the search from 'in French' to 'any language'.

An additional thought (not knowing if you used a search tool or performed a manual search)--if you use a tool to perform the searches, the tool's setting may be configured to choose the 'local' search settings for regional (or non-North American) search engines....

Would a typical foreign know about the radio buttons and selecting regional or worldwide? I searched manually on the France Yahoo, and I didn't see the selection.

I found it right in the search box at the top of the Yahoo France page. Underneath where it says: Recherche sur le Web
it has the radio button choices:
[button]en français [button]dans toutes les langues

Best thing to do is optimize your website for/in French.

Our website is optimized in five different languages, but the CEO wants to go further to make sure we are reaching the international countries by buying our domain name with the country url (i.e. companyname.fr) and then have the country host it as well.

Hi Ajpaulus,
I hope you are doing well *(-_-)*
I am facing problem same as You.....
We are at Top in Universal Search but when i will go to UK country search i am not finding my listing.
The reason is that our server that we have taken Domin Name is in US and our company in UK so we are getting same problem as you.
So i will suggest you now take domain name from Your Country server (.fr) so UUU will not face problem any time.
I hope it will help you.....

A number of Search Engines will recieve Traffic internationally.
The question is can you make sales to these countries, have you checked the delivery costs, import, tax and other legal issues.
Check voltages, Hz of electrical products you sell.
Video, DVD, etc. check region etc..
Don't pay for international traffic if you can't make sales there.

As a non USA SEO company, my advice is to translate the most important pages of your site (at least one)
to the local language you want to target your sales.
The reason is that many people do not speak english ,yet ;)
Many people do their search first with their mother tongue (I do it.....)
The second advice is to buy a doamin with country extensions like fr,uk or de.
The reason is that some Search Engines does not except your submission if you do not have a local extension or not written in the local language.
And the most imprtant is that the search engines like Yahoo and Google knows where my searches came from (my IP address) and they prefer to give me first the local results (specially the ads)
So, we are here in the Middle East and Europe do not see the same results as you in USA
I hope iI helped

Foreign domain name and how much are hosting companies in the UK?
Check bandwidth, storage and needs are enough for your needs. Check
Hosting and Name charges they may be pieced separately: -
In the UK, check bandwidth is high enough, (the lowest price I've found
about £25.00 a year)
