I have seen blog comments around Twitter ratios suggesting that having the right follow to followers ratio will be valuable to SEO efforts. Are there any real world examples of how your ratio helped your site?

A twitter profile with many followers it's something like a Trusted Profile. When you have many followers, you have an "audience".
Let me tell you what can improve your SERP: retweets by others.

Twitter followers and Retweets does help you in your ranking. Which gives search engine like Google the credibility of your site. Not only Twitter but also getting a good numbers of bookmarks from social bookmarking sites also help you in ranking. I am not talking about backlinking here, it shows the credibility and how popular you site is.

Hmm its a good question actully i am also confused for this i my self believe that twitter followers and tweets will not help you in ranking but i read one article in seo where one author write her experience that some news paper twitted regarding their service in their news and than on the second day only that keyword comes on 2nd position and got so many visits but after some times that keyword went back. I will surely post that link if i would able to find it again. yes but it is useful to drive more traffic.

According to an article that was posted recently, its not the number of followers and following but the quality of the one's you follow and those who follows you back. Meaning, you cant just add someone, you need to check their stature.
And about re-tweets, its a sure thing to improve your SERP so dont forget to add your links.

Correct. In fact, there are several such articles, all based on a recent video of Matt Cutts speaking re. the recent change made by Google vis-a-vis its us of signals from social networking sites, and his interview with Danny Sullivan.
But, you need to provide a citation, preferably in the form of a link, so that others can read it in its entirety.

I was thinking of something both recent and direct from Google, particularly this Matt Cutts video of 17 DEC 2010.
