iam currently writing a paper on ways of evaluating a large supermarkets ecommerce strategy. does anyone know of any ways i can do this, are there any set tools and techniques you can apply to evalauting a companies online strategy, iam not just talking about how good their website looks etc, but their actual strategy, are there ways of looking at a compnay and its websites and determinign this???

It sounds like you are looking at finding out what SEO strategies eccomerce companies are doing and other online marketing strategies that have. Many companies are not going to just tell you that info. I'd suggest looking around for SEO "spy" type tools and check in on them to see what they are doing plus read up on SEO so you understand what doing on.
