Hi,

Was anyone affected by the accidental Google Gmail account deletion?

They've restored from backups now, but it does show that even when you have multi-node online redundancy of system data, that it can still go wrong!

This is why we never use or recommend mission critical services be hosted by someone else for free..

That is a very good point Steve, you are right, there will be business affected by this as well as Joe Bloggs down the street because some people do seem to want to run their business with free everything. The problem is that when you want support, you get what you paid for :)

on the other hand...
When I was using the Windows email client, Outlook/Outlook Express I was repeatedly attacked by viruses through email, and since moving to gmail I have had NO issues with unwanted email viruses, plus the greatest spam filter I've ever used. I suppose sh*t happens to everyone, but with gmail, I've had to wade through a lot less of it.

Heard about this. Fortunately it didn't effect me.

You didn't have a very good anti virus program installed then. Or you didn't keep it up to date.

The only thing I use Gmail for is for not so important emails and as a back up if my domain email is broken for some reason.

All emails are on my computer and backed up 2x a day.

With a mere fraction of the total e-mail client market, and no direct revenue stream, to expect good and reliable service from Gmail is rather unrealistic.

For mission critical purposes, you must go with a paid for professional enterprise grade service.

Agreed... I don't use any online email system (I mean I relay email through a few of them but). Why do I need a web based email client? I only check from the same machine every day. There is no benefit to an online email system for me anyways, and desktop keeps a local copy for me at all times. If my battery dies, or my internet goes down. I still have my email.

That being said, I have had a hotmail account for years, and I have been sending it email quite a bit, it has a few hundred thousand emails or so sitting it in (logs and stuff). Compared to desktop, it is slow in comparison. Maybe that is just Hotmail though, maybe Gmail is better?
