PageRank is reported by Google itself as being one parameter taken into account to compute the ranking of a page with search engine (SE) results pages (SERP)—so it definitively gives a boost to the ranking of a page.

By saying PR or page rank do you mean the Google page rank tool bar or the actual PR (Google page rank algorithm)? . Many misunderstand ( mainly beginners) , well Google's Page rank algorithm is a very important factor in SERPs, it gets updated continuously and nobody knows the exact value except Google and Tool bar PR gives a rough idea about the page rank value but not the exact one as it is updated every 3-4 months sometimes more than that. It is the page rank algorithm that plays a major role and not the Tool bar PR that is visible.

Your question seems to contradict your statement.

To answer the question, Is PR really given importance now a days?: By experienced SEOs, absolutely. Reread Paulson's post above.

I think you should put more attention into PR in the meaning of "Public Relations".

Spending time on watching the Google toolbar PR indicator is a waste of time, but spending time on getting press mentions can be a good way to success.

Not only the pr but also the SERP is important.

Page rank can be important. You might be surprised how well a website with a page rank 2 does against competitors with a page rank of 4 or 5. If you optimize properly and advertise with a little wisdom you can defeat the stigma of a low page rank.

No one is suggesting you pay attention to toolbar PageRank. But we all understand that links are important to ranking, right?

Please show me an example of this. I've never seen this for a competitive phrase.

Look, folks, I know it's confusing when you rely on *toobar* PR. It's not accurate anyway. And even when it is, a site lower PR may outrank a higher PR page because of other factors such as anchor text or content. But that doesn't mean PR isn't central to the algorithm.
