Hi all,
I'm not sure if this is the most appropriate place for all of my questions but I'm hoping that someone can help.
Since last weekend, my website, which is hosted at highly rated web hosting firm which will go unnamed for the time being, as been displaying the error: Bad Request (Invalid Hostname). I would estimate that it has been down for a total of 24-48 hrs. throughout the entirety of the week. I know, from my discussions with the host, that it is due to the application pool crashing. What I don't know is what is causing the application pool to crash.
My site, which is a classic ASP site whose code base has been in place for a long time, is my business website and has been hosted with them for nearly 10 years. I've found them to be uninformative and the response time unacceptable - I last encountered that error 4 hrs ago and the application pool has yet to be restarted. I have a domain alias for a family website set up that is pointing to a folder on my server. That site works fine and has only had that error occur once over the past week. The only software related difference is that my business site runs off of an SQL database while for my family site, I never had the opportunity to convert the Access database over to SQL.
There is nothing extreme about the ASP or SQL code. There are several sections that are database driven but only hit the database 1-2 times. All connections are also closed. And, as I mentioned, this code hasn't changed in a long time. The last time any real changes were made to the actual functionality was in 2007-2008 to help protect against SQL injection attacks and to ensure all database connections were closed.
So, my questions are:
1. What are some reasons as to why the application pool would continue to keep crashing?
2. Would it be due to other client sites?
3. How is that my main site keeps getting this error while my alias site doesn't?
4. How many sites are commonly assigned to an application pool in a shared hosting environment?
My last questions, which are the ones that I don't know are appropriate in this forum, follow below and, right now, the most important to me. I've just composed a response to the last e-mail I received from this hosting company's tech support this afternoon. In this message, I've explained that this has cost me potential customers and could, due to the amount of downtime, be affecting my SEO rankings. I've ended the message stating that if I don't receive adequate answers to my questions and if this isn't resolved, I will end my 10 year relationship with their company, urge my clients to find new hosting providers and report them to the Better Business Bureau. I also searched the internet for the e-mail addresses of higher officials to CC on this message. I found the e-mail address for their CFO and am taking a guess at their CEO's e-mail address. Is it appropriate for a. the threats and b. to copy these individuals?
