I know Alexa rating is worthless but the reality is that potential advertisers what to see my site with a higher rank on it before they buy advertising, no matter what you tell them. :-x
Any ideas on how to boost Alexa ranking?

I've read that one way is to install their toolbar and browse your own site regularly - though I've never done this myself.

See for the higher rank try to get most high PR backlinks or buy it as paid then you can get some advertisers.

Definitely! It's a way to get on the map. Also, Alexa has widgets you can add to your website so that anyone coming to it will register.

increasing your Alexa rankings is quite simple. Get more traffic to your site that is. You can do this with a little help from your SEO buddy. Learn to promote your website through submissions and article writing.

That is exactly how to boost your Alexa ranking far quicker than people using their toolbar. That widget does the same thing that the toolbar does. And here is another secret, if you don't want to show that Alexa badge on your site for the whole world to see ... hide it with CSS.

Outside of your bubblegum answer for submissions and article writing, you are right about "getting a little help", but not from your SEO buddy.

Here is an alarming statistic. There are a number, and I do mean NUMBER, of sites run by individuals in India and Pakistan where they are boosting Alexa ranking by sheer numbers. If you start analyzing the some of the sites in the top 350K or so, with intermittant peaks above 100K, you will see that their rankings are even higher within those two countries.

Bottom line, Alexa as traffic gauge can be gamed easily. If a business exec is using that data to determine if a site is worth advertising on or not, then he should be fired on the spot.
