I rely on Microsoft Adlabs Data (http://adlab.msn.com/online-commercial-intention/) for my Keyword to help predict whether or not a keyword or key phrase is going to have a strong commercial intent and therefore, clicks form those searches being more likely to end in a conversion (gift card) as opposed to queries that might be informational (how to ride a motorcycle).

The Microsoft AdLabs site and associated web service for querying online commercial intent has been spotty of late. That said, it is the only publically, freely accessible data that I am aware of to predict commercial intent.

My question is how do others predict commercial intent of a keyword during keyword research? Through PPC tests? Third party data beside Microsoft? Evaluation of commercial intent of keywords often seems to be overlooked while focusing solely on search volume and competition, until the analysis of campaign results, which is way too late. If you use Microsoft OCI, has the matched the actual conversion rates?

A combination a PPC test and traffic estimation with a micro site.

Bernd, thanks for the feedback. Have you ever compared the results of your PPC tests with Microsoft Adlabs Data (http://adlab.msn.com/online-commercial-intention/)? If so, were the OCI predictors aligned with your tests?

I tested some domains with the Adlabs tool. I don't think the results are accurate.
For example two money-machines:
google.com Non-Commercial Intention 0.69
microsoft.com Commercial Intention 0.62

The best option for you would be to use PPC Marketing for various keywords either on Google or Bing. Using PPC for 1-2 Months, you can test and see which keywords convert frequently into leads and which one do not.

Take for example, if you are focusing on both Google and Bing, then you cannot rely on Microsoft Data because Microsoft can only show you consumer behavior on Bing/MSN but not on Google.

It is best to use PPC to see the TRUTH.

I haven't used that Microsoft Adlabs Data software but it sounds interesting. I may try it out if there is a trial version available. I'd like to know more about PPC.
