View Full Version : Where to sell Domain Names ???
05-12-2004, 08:27 PM
This is a very interesting forum topic, and while I have not played the "Domain Game", I do have several domains parked until I require them. Some of these "domain names" are no longer relevant to my business, but may be of value to someone else.
So my question is :-
where do you sell a domain name ???
I have thought of E-Bay but that is only a 7 day window. I have thought of builing a site of my own to sell my "two" spare domains, but this seems overkill. So what do you suggest, folks?

Sedo and afternic are 2 of the top places to sell names. Sedo is free to list and they take 10% of sale price but for that you also get their escrow service. They also offer featured listings for 39 a month. I see the most sales and highest offerings there. Plus there are some good domain forums where you can list your domains for sale but at those you will get wholesale prices, not retail.

Thanks for the info, I did a search on both Sedo and Afternic. The only thing is that Afternic seems to have some bad press, but this bad press seems to be from 2002. Can you tell me if they have cleaned up their act, has anyone had problems with Atrernic recently ?
Cheers .... Dave

They used to have problems but Afternic was bought over in 2002 by a concern called ProProject. They seem to have worked things out.
In addition to listing your names on domain exchanges like Afternic & SEDO, that would give your names important exposure, another profitable technique used by successful domain sellers is to contact potential buyers directly or at least to have your domains seen by them.
For instance, you would offer your .com name to someone who has the .net version, etc.
Or say you are a Nascar enthusiast and have several 'Nascar' domains for sale. Where would you go to find other Nascar enthusiasts and give your domain exposure? Right, a Nascar community or forum.
These are just a few thoughts, I hope will spark a few ideas and help you find buyers for your names.

edwinjs idea is a pretty good one.
I had purchased a domain name that was listed in google and paid yahoo listing for propecia online. So I went and did a search for propecia on different search engines big and small.
I personally emailed websites that weren't at the top (they would be more willing to purchase a yahoo listed domain name to help get them to the top).
I had an intrested guy however, after speaking with the owner of the company I realized it was going to be a lot of work to see it to them. Because they were in the UK and wanted listings in UK search engines more, even though my website was listed in the UK yahoo.
But as long as you make sure to personalize the email, it can't hurt to ask that way.

I tried to send personal emails to owners of .net version of the .com I own before, but disappointingly I have never received any reply.
Perhaps, I did not write the proposal well.
Also, any particular strategy to have Sedo work for you? I tried the free listing. But not really effective. Would appreciate any tips.

What about Bazaar?
I'd like to hear about your experience there. I.e. how many domains out of 10 actually sell, average price, etc.

BuyDomains is another one. Don't know anything about Bazaar.
Something I have recently started is posting to END USER forums about my names. Won't work if you have generics. But I have some good real estate, mortgage and travel names so am started to do a soft sell at related forums. Also Google groups has a forum for everything and they also have a forum for listing domains for sale. Don't know how effective that would be but it's free.

Bazaar is owned by Afternic, its sale system is a bit different - every hour the price drops a little bit, and when it reaches the highest bid, the domain automatically sells.
You can check it out at http://www.afternic.com/bazaar.php

Thanks for all the advice, I just thought I would let you know what I did, and will let you know the results [when they happen ???].
I have placed [just] 4 domain names with Sedo, I am going to place some more [as I purchase them] with Afternic. Then maybe check out BuyBomains for a comparison.
Of the four domains placed with Sedo two are 'adult', and the others are - theshopguide.com & easytofindwebsites.com. I have used Sedo's 'standard' listings, and parked my domains with Sedo. After a week I will let you know the stats on enquiries and any offers.
Meanwhile I will visit the forums mentioned to promote my 'domains for sale'.
Cheers, thanks for the advice and keep it coming ..... David
