Hi Everybody,

I am wondering what is everybody doing about spam protection.
I know your first answer would be , I use Akismet.
But Akismet cost money. It enough that you have affiliate links on your site and you already have to pay $5/month. Have more then one site like that and it is $50/month.

So what do you actually do?
Do you pay? Do you use another plugin? Which one(s)
Or, do you ignore the rules and declare all your sites to be personal use?

Thanks,

I use Akismet and it's free for me. Just register at wordpress.com and get your API key. You can also use captcha plugins (http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/search.php?q=captcha&sort=) but they are sometimes hard to read.

Aside from Akismet, I use WP-ReCaptcha on pretty much every form. Recaptcha is now a Google Service you can sign up for with your Google Account and get API keys. It's built in to Gravity Forms, which is a great form builder.

In regards to your question, what I have used in the past is Akismet and also use a plugin for Math Spam Protection. You can add a field to your blog with a simple math equation. It works fine for me as an "extra filter" in addition to Akismet. Here is where you can go if you would like to try it out.

Keep in mind that it is only compatible up to Wordpress 3.0.4
