Hi WebProWorld Flash Forum Members!!!

It's time to get your motors running and get to work! We are announcing a new Flash contest from WebProWorld. That's right! Since we had such a great time with our last contest, Brittany and the rest of the crew at WebProWorld have put together a new contest with some great prizes. Check below for further details and find out how to enter!

==============================================

WebProWorld Flash Animation Contest:

Project: Storyboard style animation.
Examples: Short story, movie trailer/teaser, music video, etc.
File Size: Maximum of 3MB
Duration: 2 - 5 minutes

Objective:
The objective of this contest is to show Flash's ability to convey a message or stimulate an emotion. The challenge is to create a short story, movie, trailer or teaser, music video, etc. You are free to choose your own topic for the contest.

The restrictions are pretty light: The Maximum file size for this contest is 3MB. These movies should be posted on your server with a link in your post directing the viewers to your entry. If you take a look at www.shockwave.com, most Flash animations are around 2MB.

The animation should last between 2 -5 minutes. The average Flash movie lasts between 3-4 minutes so this is a good range to shoot for.

No overly graphic violence, graphic sexual content/pornography or profanity will be accepted. All entries must be submitted to our Brittany or to one of the two moderators of the Flash forum, J_Paul or ghstdrgns, for approval prior to listing it in the contest thread. You can do this by simply emailing them or sending them a PM via the WebProWorld Forums.

While we do not accept self-promotion in the forums, you are allowed to post your personal or company credits at the end of your animations with links to
your site.

To be eligible, all entries must be submitted no later than June 7th, 2004 at 11:59 PM EST - that gives you one month from today to create your animation!

Projects will be judged on the use of animation, element design and how the elements are used in the animation piece, proper use of movement based on the design style of piece, and use of sound, music and voiceovers. Note on Music videos: We would suggest using original music or something not published by a known recording artist.

We understand that everyone's drawing and animation styles are different; so if you can only draw stick figures, then animate them. Have fun with this contest. It is time to shine as an artist and animator.

Prizes:
1st Place:
A complete series of Flash tutorials from http://CartoonSmart.com (value of over $150.00)
Feature on WebProWorld.com for one day
Feature in the WebProWorld newsletter for one day
Placement in the featured sites in the FlashNewz newsletter.

2nd Place:
Mention on WebProWorld main page for one day.
Mention in WebProWorld newsletter for one day.
Placement in the featured sites in the FlashNewz newsletter.

3rd Place:
Placement in the featured sites in the FlashNewz newsletter

Now get working! Good luck to all contestants!

Just a quick note. Don't be afraid to ask questions. John and I are here and I am sure Brittany will be watching as well, to answer any of your questions regarding the contest.

I can tell you from personal experience that Justin of http://CartoonSmart.com is a great guy and puts out great tutorials.

You get his full collection, everything on his site pretty much. He provides all SWF and FLA files for each tutorial and each tutorial is a quality QuickTime video. The winner has the option of either downloading the files, or Justin has graciously agreed to send a CD "anywhere" if your connection speed does not allow you to download the files.

Good luck to all. I look forward to seeing your work.

Hello,

I just finished the animation 5 minutes ago. Shall I leave the address here or must be mailed to your mailbox? Now comes some questions:
1) The length of the movie is 8 minutes
2) Size 2.5 MB
3) The song is original by a very famous singer and she has already given me the permission to make this movie based on her song. Therefore it was impossible to reduce the time or not using the original song. As without that spiritual and powerful song, the animation will be meaningless.

Best regards,
Kiumars

Kiumars,

Great! Our first entry already! :)

If you don't mind, could you please email the animation or the link to me at bthompson@ientry.com with "WebProWorld" in the subject line?

We'll just need to pre-approve it and make sure it doesn't violate any forum rules (http://www.webproworld.com/rules.html) before posting it here, that's all ;)

I look forward to seeing it!

To help get your creative juices flowing, here are a few examples of Flash sites that use animation in very effective ways:

A discussion (http://www.webproworld.com/viewtopic.php?t=2534) on Billy Bussey's site

The Ring (http://www.ring-themovie.com/) - one creepy and mysterious site

Ninjai.com (http://www.ninjai.com) - an exellent example of Flash being used to tell a story

Woohoo! We have our first entry:

The Line (http://www.web2.dk/theline.htm) by Kiumars

Feel free to comment on the entries, as always, as long as you remember to provide constructive comments and criticism.

Remember, even though some of us have had more experience in Flash animation than others, we were all "newbies" once upon a time! ;o)

I like the piece and that you took the effort to get permission to use the piece of music.
I noticed that on the flash, you spelled ANGEL as engle.

Thaks Tomoe should be Thanks Tomoe.

...Never know where it ends until we loose (LOSE) interest...

Actually there are other grammatical errors that need to be fixed.

Apart from that it's cool. Good job. Great choice of a song. Inspiring piece.

Heya Brittany? You sure it is thering.com ? Hmm i went to the site... it's a wedding ring site... nothing creepy about that. Hehe.

Then again it migh be to some. ;)

I really like the way this flash was done http://www.masterandcommanderthefarsideoftheworld.com/site_flash.html for the Russel Crowe movie. Master and Commander: The Far Side of The World.

Not sure if these really fit within the competition, also I am showing the work of a third party from whom I commissioned this work. These are examples of non promotional use of flash, they are aimed at educational / training in the public service area.

The water cycle gets about 500 visits per month, the ‘fix dripping tap’ gets regular ‘thank you’ emails to me from all over the world.

http://www.midkentwater.co.uk/educational/cycle.htm

http://www.midkentwater.co.uk/household/efficiency/home.htm#window then click on ‘click here to fix a dripping tap’

http://www.midkentwater.co.uk/services/household/setprice/ballvalve.htm#win then click on the link to “see how a ball valve works”

These have all been done by a local web design company that I use called ‘Green and Tempest’ who also do other educational examples such as http://www.greenandtempest.co.uk/writing/ and http://www.greenandtempest.co.uk/migrants/birds.html

Not sure that these are what the competition is aimed at, however this is where flash can really come into its own.

All the best

Simon

Whoops! As creepy as that jewelry site "might" have been, that wasn't the URL I meant to post. The "real" URL for the official The Ring movie site is: http://www.ring-themovie.com/

Check it out!

Hi,

I am new to the forum. I just signed up and this is my first post. I would like to submit and entry for the contest. This is an amimation that I did for use on some of our client sites to educate patients on Presbyopia ( Aging Eye).

The link to get there is http://stu.aii.edu/~sbw531/flsh.htm

It is the first animation on the page. Please let me know if this meets the requirments. I think it does, but I want to be sure.

Thanks and I look forward to participating more in the forum.

Some good work.

Just a little advice from an old flasher, you guys need to up your frame rate to around 60 fps. It gives a much smoother effect.

Good advice, but a little high. If I'm not mistaken, QuickTime only runs at around 15 fps. I have done them at 30 fps, and they do great. 60 might be overdoing it.

But you do make a good point. The default 12 fps is very clunky.

Kimboj, I loved your entry!!!!! So delicate, and about music... :o) True Congratulations!

(his entry is: http://www.members.shaw.ca/kimgroves/ani/music/music.htm )

And about the fotograms´ speed I agree with you. The intro I posted here was made at 30. It was impossible to follow the music at less fps with some "grace". And I think that at 40 fps would be even more "smooth", as synergytheory mentioned.

It is a goooood advise.

Kisses and good mornings :o)

I have been thinking about this for a little while now and I would like to bring about a point. Everyone wanting to enter this contest really needs to read the submission requirements. I will reprint them at the end of this post.

This contest was created to stretch your abilities as Flash designers, new or seasoned, to create something that makes someone laugh, smile, cry (or want to cry), ponder or get excited. When was the last time you went to the movies and saw a trailer that just caught your attention? You had absolutely no clue what the movie was about but it looked really, really cool. Or the last time you went to "JoeCartoon.com" and let piranhas eat a gerbil or blended a frog?

We are starting to see some movie trailers and inspirational pieces come in and that is great. But to put this a simple as possible with out hurting peoples feeling; this is not a contest for site intros. Now this is not to say that site intro’s can not be entered in the contest. But the intro needs to be able to stand alone like a cartoon, short story, or movie clip would be able too. For example, take a look at http://www.lookandfeel.com/. Now this intro does go through how to us the site and covers the basics of any standard intro; but it has a comedic flare that makes it stand out. The little Luke and Phil characters could be by themselves and stand alone. They would create an emotional response.

Am I making my point? This is a storyboard animation contest. That means there is a story behind the animation.

Kimboj’s animation instills a sense of inspiration. It is a calming piece that touches a part of you. C.Salzman’s Frankenstein movie trailer is a piece that instills an eerie feeling. Eschillay’s trailer adds humor to a sometimes boring topic. Swilliam’s animation has character animation as well as a tutorial that is thought provoking and educational. This is just a sample of the good entries we have received so far. (Please don’t take offense if I didn’t include you here)

Brittany was kind enough to offer examples of the kind of animations that are in line with this contest. I suggest reviewing those links.

And again, the rules for this contest…

Prizes:

I am grateful that you have put out a contest and if I have enough time I'll try it. Although I was thinking of actually buying some of the courses so my own entry would be a little better than just stick figures lol...

But I don't mean to sound negative but it seems lots of these contests are paradoxical... Ironic humor which is my own favorite type.

For example does anyone who can create a flash that can beat everyone elses design actually need lessons? To be fair the person who makes the worst animation should get lessons... and the best one can win money or something.

I see contests like this all the time though one photoshop one. Make the best image manipulation and win a free copy of photoshop. Yet odds are the program used to make the winning entry was photoshop.

It's like putting out a flyer in your post office for a contest to win a free computer open to only those without a computer currently, and the rules say to win you must send an email saying why you deserve it.

This contest is a little less of a paradox since with so many lessons it is likely the person that wins will still be able learn something new which is good I guess. Although its supposed to focus on conveyance of emotion which can be done even with a little knowledge of flash and some good writing...

I don't mean this in a bad way just pointing out the obscure humor in it... :)

Just a thought.

Long time reader, 2nd time poster (1st was above).

A few years back I was a member of an online community of photoshoppers in the 209 area code (cali) and we did "Photoswaps." One person would create an image, send it to someone, that person would edit it, send it back, etc. Back and forth, you've probably all heard of these before.

Anyway I did this back then for the website and as an attempt to start "Flash Swaps," although it never got off the ground (it was tough to figure out the ground rules - send swf or fla? etc.). I'd like to work on this contest some more and do something much better, but here's a half-decent entry that I worked on a long time ago (I'll try to do something else though if I can post more than one entry!):

WOW! I go away for the weekend and come back to a ton of questions...

Here is my go at answering them all:
petermigs - We have no restriction on age. You may enter this contest or any other within WPW as long as your entries meet the requirements and follow the guidelines.

obscurevisions - You know this is a good point. But Justin covers more than just animation. His tutorials cover Technical drawing, Characters, and animation in Flash. Game design, Web site design, and now, New Dreamweaver Tutorials. And the winner gets them all. Maybe you are a decent animator but have never done a web site or programmed a game before. The tutorials cover a broad range of design so we thought there would be something for everyone.

1FastGTX -You can enter as many times as you would like.

I will get tot eh rest in a bit. Hope this helps some of you.

Late.

Hi WebProWorld Flash Forum Members!!!

Hello,

Let me start off by saying that I am not a Flash expert. However, I am "seeking" the skills of a expert flash designer. Would anyone be interested in using my "project" as an opportunity to highlight their design skills during this Flash Animation Contest?

Mr. Timothy Hooks

Tim, While normally I would move something like this to freelance, I think it is very appropriate for this contest.

If anyone would like the chance to make a little cash on this contest as well as the current prizes, contact Tim for more information. Keep in mind, all entries must be received by June 7th. So if you want to take on Tim's challenge, I would suggest doing it quickly.

Again, best of luck to all.

Does the FLASH animation have to be a movie? Can I submit my FLASH portfolio, there is no length but it is very cool?

You can submit anything you want to submit. If anything, it will get your portfolio listed here in this thread.

Just keep in mind that the contest is for storyboard style animation. When it comes to judging, the entries that meet the criteria of the contest will get precedence over everything else; regardless of quality. There is still plenty of time to create a really cool piece that meets the criteria. I personally have done several in two weeks time or less.

EVERYBODY! Remember, we all started out as newbie’s; with an application and little to no knowledge. Do not be intimidated by the sample sites offered or the entries already submitted. Everyone has a fair shot at this contest. Like I said before, if you can only draw stick figures, then draw them and animate them. There are several sites that have stick figure animation that are extremely popular.

So take a deep breathe, think of something that you enjoy and animate it.

Again, best of luck to everyone.

Welcome to WebProWorld, muhrijn!

It's great to hear that you are so enthusiastic about the contests since we really do enjoy holding them!

Hopefully you will find some time over the weekend to enter... we still have time left so anyone else who is thinking about entering, go ahead! :)

I would like to submit my personal portfolio for this contest. It does not meet the requirements exactly but I worked very hard on it and I think it elicits a fun emotion from my users. The problem is I cannot submit the swf because it is launched from my site using JavaScript and needs to be an exact size.

This is not meant to be an entry to the contest. Even though I think it is the best place to post it.

It is one of my very first works in flash.

Here means to be more the sharing of my beloved Tango music from this city which I live in and I am faithfully in love with.

My Buenos Aires. :o)

The composer of the music is one of the bests, Astor Piazzolla, if not the best of our time. The rest is just some images to follow it. Nothing else, it´s very simple.

Hope you enjoy it.

Get Down is a very good track. If you want to hear my favorite song get "The Message" off of his second album (the album with I ruled the world). It is awesome. His ode to his mom "One more Dance" is also my favorite cause I can relate, losing my mom at a young age.

OK,
Since I am not judging this contest, I guess for the sake of doing it, I am going to place an entry. I am entering these as an employee of Metron North America. This is my 8-5 and does not relate to my personal site or business.

If by pure luck I should win first place, the first place prize of the tutorials by Justin of http://www.cartoonsmart.com/ will go to the second place winner. (That is, IF I were to come in first place (which I doubt); but the recognition for first place I will be keeping all to myself... again if I were to win. :o) )

My entries lie here:
http://www.metrononline.com/bermuda/bermuda_flash.html
http://www.metrononline.com/bermuda/episode02_final.html
http://www.metrononline.com/bermuda/episode03.html
http://www.metrononline.com/bermuda/episode04.html
http://www.metrononline.com/bermuda/episode05.html
http://www.metrononline.com/bermuda/episode06.html
http://www.metrononline.com/bermuda/episode07.html

There are 7 episodes to this promotional series; the largest being 476kb. So all are pretty small.

At the end of each movie the viewer gets three choices; one choice won them a chance at a prize, (no longer available, so don't think you can win anything) the other two ended the movie and the viewer would have to go back through the movie to find the right ending. You can either go through them to find the right endings or not, the choice is yours. But it was incredibly fun to do. Most of the animation was done with trial and error; and the characters are all members of the sales and marketing teams of Metron North America. Credits can be found at the end of the last episode (where the right choice is green).

I hope you enjoy watching them as much as I enjoyed making them.

Again, best of luck to all.

muhjrin - very moving entry! That's exactly the sort of thing we're looking for :) And who knew you and gwsoccer14 were both Nas fans?!

tkmorin - not bad for an entry that was "done rather quickly"

thusmann - even though you can't enter files created by people other than yourself, they are VERY entertaining. I loved the Star Wars one! If nothing else, hopefully they'll provide good examples of possible entries!

Scott - Fluffy the Squid? haha :D I had too much fun going through those Bermuda episodes... and I'll admit, I died a couple times. But ah, well.

While I feel that we have some great entries here, I do feel that the entries should show direct effort to this contest. I think that somehow the entrants have strayed away from the original goal of the contest. That is to CREATE. While it is good to show off your past flash designs, I think that if you are going to enter a contest, put your heart into creating something original for that contest. I would think that the creators and judges of this contest would want nothing less than original creativity for this contest. I know that we all are short on time, but if we are to enter this contest, let's give it the respect that it deserves and CREATE.

Hi,
I would like to submit my two short stories for this contest. We are working hard to complete these stories for this contest since last month.

We are small group of parents and we are developing short stories for our young kids on two areas.
First, The Jataka tales date back to the third century BC and are considered the oldest form of story-narrating practice. The Jataka tales depict the Buddha in several of his births in the form of animals. These stories, though simple, are high on moral content considered good for one's emotional, moral and spiritual health. The Buddha is the protagonist and the central character in each of these stories.

URL for story under above category is

Second are short stories to convey message using funny characters and animals.
URL under this category is

We sincerely hope it’s a great joy to visit the site

Was not sure I would finish in time. Only 30 seconds, but I will explain why. First, the background was done in Photoshop. The tree and clouds and leaves were done in Flash.

The character was also done in Flash. I used motion tweening for the clouds, but I drew the character on twos. For those that do not know traditional animation, that means that for this short clip there are over 300 individual drawings for the movement of the person. That is why I did not go any longer than 30 seconds. Also, why I did not get the chance to clean up the drawings as much as I would have liked to.

Hope someone enjoys. Would also love any critique. My main goal was to evoke an emotion in thirty seconds.

Here are two last-minute entries sent to me yesterday before the deadline from Jonathan Commons:

POOPSTARS.SWF
http://www.flash-toons.com/poopstarsonlinemovie.php
A few years ago the South African version of the Popstars TV show was
sponsored by the worlds largest soft drink manufacturer and aired on South
African Television. In South Africa there are only a few TV channels and
every time you turned on the TV all that seemed to be on was hour after hour
of talentless morons wailing away out of tune and off key. After a while we
said enough is enough and in protest we produced our own flash version
called Poopstars.

SIPHO.SWF
http://www.flash-toons.com/siphoonlinemovie.php
The adventures of Sipho and Demand-a-Doc was produced in 2002 for
Demand-a-Doc.com as part of a proposed email marketing campaign.
Demand-a-doc however has never really been officially launched for what
reason I do not no. This flash cartoon has been sitting on my hard drive
since 2002 waiting for the official launch of Demandadoc.com which I do not
think is ever gonna happen. We have therefore decided to release it now and
are fully within our rights to do so. The cartoon has an African flavour and
the dialogue uses some South African slang.

My condolances on your loss.
I did something similar when I first got Flash. I did not know about optimizing, so the file is large. About 25Mb. I no longer have the original fla file, otherwise I would fix it and add a preloader. It makes me too sad to think about doing it all over again from scratch. Here is a link if you are interested.

Kingman -- thank you for your kind words and condolences. I downloaded your swf and it was fantastic as well, and I too am sorry for your loss. :(

BTW, there are a few programs out there that will "rip" a swf file and convert it to FLA for you. "SWF Decompiler" or something like that ...

kas
06-11-2004, 02:14 PM
Kingman, I agree with 1FastGTX your swf was great and sorry for your lost.
Also just a note, .FLA is a proprietary format by macromedia and a decompiler cannot rip to that format. SWF Decompiler and SWF Quicker can decompile your swf and save it to its format (.SQF) and then you can optimize it and export it again to SWF.

1FastGTX
06-11-2004, 07:27 PM
Kas -- "Imperator" will rip a swf file and convert it to FLA, but will not however get you any actionscript. I downloaded it once because a hard drive crash made me lose my FLA and I needed to make changes to it (needless to say I learned my lesson and now practice better backup routines!).

The FLA it exported was pretty shoddy, very basic, no named layers, etc. It was not easy to make changes to the FLA but it will do the trick if you have a complicated SWF that you don't want to rebuild from scratch. :)

Thanks for your comments, tkmorin. I really appreciate. There's not much story to tell. The whole site is dedicated to hearing impared people, specially to children. When a child hears for the first time after getting a hearing aid or any kind of additional help, he or she can´t relate sounds with the objects producing them. Strange enough, old people that have lost their hearing ability for a long time suffer the same problem. The whole idea of this series of "games" is to help them to relate different sounds with different objects (in this case, piano keys) to help them understand their world faster. If you check http://www.adiosalasordera.com/ludoteca/ludoteca.htm , you will find several additional "games" not related to music that pursue the same objective. All of them using, more or less, the same algorythm in different scenarios. I like to think that the little piano will help children to learn the note's name in spanish too (if they click the AYUDA, meaning HELP) and most of the rest will make them practice reading using the same button. By the way, considering that you don't speak spanish, did you click on the JUGAR or JUEGA button (meaning play)? Best wishes, Juan Neuman.

Hey everyone,

Thanks for your patience. There were so many great entries that it took a panel of three judges to decide on the winners...

Before we announce the winners, I'd like to draw your attention to a few entries that we decided were "too good" for the tutorials prize... but that's a compliment! :) These entries went above and beyond our expectations and as these contestants are obviously skilled Flash animators already, we really didn't feel they would benefit as much from the tutorials. As honorable mentions, they will still make the FlashNewz newsletter, though.

Honorable Mentions

mindwhirl's Spoof Wars (http://www.mindwhirl.com/spoofwars/index.html)
ghstdrgns' Bermuda Flash (http://www.metrononline.com/bermuda/bermuda_flash.html)
Animax Entertainment (http://www.animaxentertainment.com/bd/)

There was also one entry that we were very pleased with, but was shorter than the contest requirements:

http://www.members.shaw.ca/kimgroves/ani/music/music.htm

Although this entry was a little too short, it is still worth viewing. The love of music behind this piece shines through loud and clear. Good job!

Now that you've had time to take a look at those entries, let's see who the actual winners are...

First Place
Poopstars Online (http://www.flash-toons.com/poopstarsonlinemovie.php). Good animation, entertaining storyboard. What more can we say?

Second Place
Muhrijn's Martin Luther King tribute (http://www.muhrijn.com/contest/contest_entry.html) - This actually looks like a commercial you'd see on TV...

Third Place
http://www.bobbyhaley.com/imissyou/ - A touching movie that gets the point across.

You can expect winners to be announced in the next issue of our FlashNewz (http://flashnewz.com/) newsletter as well.

WebProWorld, FlashNewz and CartoonSmart would like to send out a HUGE thank you to everyone who entered. We really enjoyed holding this contest and seeing what you guys could come up with. If you're good, we might even hold similar Flash contests in the future! :)

Extra special thanks goes out to Justin from CartoonSmart! It's been a blast holding this contest. Thanks for giving us the opportunity!

However I believe that it is of importance to notice the high level of quality of all the entries submitted. There has to be one winner, but certainly many ( MANY ) of the works presented qualified for the first prize. My modest opinion. :o)

For the sake of sanity and to keep personal thoughts separate from an already completed contest, I have moved Kas and Kiumars comments (and all the corresponding comments) to a new thread in the Flash forum. You can read on here:

I hope everyone enjoyed the Flash contest, and are eager to jump in and get their hands dirty on the next one, coming soon to a thread near you...
