My laptop cannot see other computers on the network while others can see my laptop.

I am running Win7. Any idea/solution anybody can suggest?

Thanks.

I have the opposite problem that someone has accessed my laptop running windows 7, accessed my emails, altered many files, and basically wrecked my life.

And that is on top of the server problems I have been having.

Trying to remain calm...but close to my limit.

To top that now some holding page has appeared at hairstylezone but it is not the standard enom holding page, so who has put that there?

I dont know who all these people are who are logging in as random new members and making random posts, but I am not such a fool as to think that the references being made are coincidental.

My laptop runs Win XP SP3 and the other machine runs 'yeccccchhh!' Vista - but I found by using the gateway (router) installation file, on a flash drive, the problem went away...

I took the files from the laptop, and installed it on the Vista machine... if your Win7 is the primary, you may want to do it in reverse...

let us know if this works.

What files are u referring to on flash drive?

I have a Netgear Router that came with an installation disk = when installing, the program requested to create an installation file with network settings on either a cdrom or flash drive (I elected to use a flash drive) and those are the files I transferred to the Vista machine... capiche?

Intresting because I also have linux installed and due to that when the grub menu comes up, I can see Vista installed there, which is odd because I did not install Vista, there are also two instances of linux operating system showing in the grub menu. I think I may just do a clean reinstall of the hard drive from the boot disc, and remove all unnecessary operating systems.

I'ts been my experience that Windows (any version) does not play well with others, and ESPECIALLY Vista.
good luck with that ;)

Does anyone here know why there would be Vista visible as being installed on my computer, it is only visible in the grub menu at boot. My computer was purchased with windows 7 preinstalled, so it seems odd to see Vista in the grub menu...is that normal, or not? As i do not want to do a full reinstall of all my software etc unless necessary. There are also actually 3 instances of Linux appear to be installed. I did install Ubuntu and as the first install failed somewhat I can understand why two instances would be there, but actually there are 3, plus Vista, plus Windows 7.

I am just not sure what to do. If Vista is unecessary and is yet another result of the computer security being compromised, is there a way to remove it without reinstalling the entire system? Or does Windows 7 use Vista as part of the system hence why it would be showing in the grub boot menu?

Bit of a thread hijack, chandrika, but as the OP is partially resolved...

Slightly OT: If your machine was preloaded with Vista, but unsold by the release date for Win 7, it was likely reloaded with an upgrade version. This would be my suspicion.

Is there a folder called "windows old" or something similar on the C:\ drive?

No with regard the old folder, and yes probably it miht have been preloaded with Viasta, and upgraded after 7 was sold. I dont know.

Chandrika: I am disappointed. If you have an issue why don't u start your own thread? First you were assuming if I were one of those who have infected
your computer and now you have overtaken the thread. My issue remains there. You seem to be a senior member so you are expected behave like one and
follow the rules.

because might be you are in different workgroup that's why you are not able to see other computers

Yes, jamesbabooli has a valid point if you did not setup as the same workgroup. If you are in the same workgroup but still cannot see the other computers, you can try using the search function to seek out the other computers by search for the computers / people in the network. I had that similar problem and manage to seek out using the search function.
