Heading tags were created to control the size of headings on web pages, with the h1 tag being the largest and the h6, the smallest. (See: http://www.w3schools.com/tags/tryit.asp?filename=tryhtml_headers for a graphic illustration.)

Because it is logical that your main headings will contain text that is highly relevant to the content of the page, most search engines consider at least the h1 tag to be a ranking factor.
