Acutally we have used classifieds to advertise random services from time to time and they work really well. The best classifieds are great for SEO and they are always good to get more hits in a search engine for your terms.

Classified advertising is a good form of free advertising. I recommend posting 2 ads every day to at least 2 to 3 classifed sites. This provides consistency and if a searcher doesn't click the first time round they will the next time their browsing, and they may in fact specifically search for your ad.

Free classified sites are a good way to increase the overall number of people that see your site and they can provide some back links for your SEO campaign, but for the most part, they will not lead to quality targeted traffic and they will reap havoc on your conversion rate.

As far as conversion rate goes, you should always keep your paid advertising stats seperate from your free advertising stats. And of course your SEO efforts seperate from all of them.

Combine them all for an overall look but keep track of each one seperately because the CR for each will be different and comparing PPC to classified advertising is like comparing apples to Sherman tanks. Totally different.

Each takes different skills too. PPC takes a skill for writing short catchy advertisements. Free classifieds you usually get more space to explain your product or service.

Classified ad sites are best for local business. From my experience they are not a great source of traffic for non-regional sites. My favorites are Craigslist and Backpage.

I know craigslist is the best. People made a lot of bucks when posting at craigslist was easy. I guess it is now difficult to make money from classifieds websites but it should still work to generate traffic.

First one I agree but have no big experience, i.e. you can place banners, exchange links with free classifieds sites.
I am not sure you excluded actually placing free classified ads. Some free classifieds sites have huge traffic and they can bring many visitors at zero cost (well it needs time for sure) if you place a free classified advertising something on sale on your site. Now this is possible but ad has to be seen as, actually be, a genuine classified, it depends very much on your site content. It is a time consuming activity but there can be a good return.

Free classified sites are the biggest source to drive traffic towards blog just like social networking sites.I love to use craigslist. It brings enormous traffic towards webpages. Besides that i use kijiji.com,traderonline.com and backpage.com as these are high PR free classified ads sites.
