anything Google puts out is top of the line......I use the keyword tool everyday!

My advice when picking keywords is to look at the exact match volumes.

Yes, there is something better - an Adwords account. You can get a much more accurate sense of what the traffic is for a given phrase. A small budget of $50 a month, say, can give you some terrific info. I agree that the Adwords external tool is one of the best ...

But to uncover new terms, try:

Hope these help.

In the order that I usually use them:

1. Google AdWords – really sophisticated, and lots of really solid data. Who knows more about keywords?
2. Microsoft AdCenter Excel Addin – all the MSN Search keyword data directly in Excel. Also includes demographic data like gender, age, income and geography.
3. Google Trends – find relative popularity of keywords over the past couple years. Also tells you what are the hottest keywords on any given date.
4. Wordtracker – solid all around keyword research tools.
5. Keyword Discovery – another solid research tool.

From my experience it works to a certain extent, but I always end up with adding keywords manually and deleting some of the suggested ones.

I think the new version of the Adwords keyword tool seems that big harder to use, in terms of getting useful results at least.

I was a bit thrown off with the new layout of Adword Keyword tool then they first released it. But now, I think it's pretty much okay to use. Just had to allow some time to get used to the new format.

SEMrush pretty good - the Google sktool not great, levels all out. Adwords as said above is a quality choice for little outlay (although you manage it yourself).

I have to agree with SEOThomas that Adwords is pretty legit, I use it the most considering is plugged into Raven tools. Wordtracker is also plugged in here and I used it a lot pre-Raven, but I lean towards Adwords more.

Have anyone use Micro Niche Finder before and Market Samurai? These two tool import their keyword research results from google adword keyword tool too.

I think the SK TOOL getting replaced soon? It's a bit dated but you could use it for website related keywords.

Since I gear my site towards Google's rank, then Bing, then Yahoo, I usually look to Google's keyword search first. I do use SEMrush however.

Overture and WordTracker tools can be used for keyword search. Overture is a free service while WordTracker is chargeable. There is also a free version of WordTracker, which supplies up to 15 suggestions for every specified word.

I have used WordTracker in conjunction with Google Keyword Tool but I depend mostly on brainstorming techniques to find good long-tail keywords that can bring traffic.

I an currently using Adwords External Keyword tool even though I have a membership. The results seem to be more accurate with less discrepancies. There are other tools out there but in my opinion it's best to stick with Adwords.
