Creating a registration script

I am trying to create a member registration application for my site. I don't have much PHP experience and have been researching multiple methods to do this. The member registration is fairly simple...

name
email
username
password
password - for verification purposes
CAPTCHA - to keep out the bots

I would like to send a verification email (no reply) with a link that needs to be clicked before an account becomes active.

Does anyone have any ideas how to do this or the right direction to get started? Thanks in advance.
