cPanel is a control panel through which you can manage aspects of your hosting account such as your email addresses.

FTP is a method of transferring files between two places such as your desktop and the web server.

You build your site as a set of (x)HTML and/or PHP files then use FTP to place those files into your account on the web server.

Neither of the packages you mention is used for website design. For that you need to choose one of the myriad website building programs.

Tell us what it is you are trying to build and you will get some recommendations.

As noted in the above posts - FTP is used to transfer files to and from your hosting server. CPanel also has a "file manager" function that will accomplish the same results, but FTP is usually faster. CPanel also has other functions like email, web stats, database, and MAYBE a web template/DYI sitebuilder depending upon what your web host provides.

To "design" your site, you can use a sitebuilder or an html editor or web design program like dreamweaver, frontpage/Expressions, etc.

Hi, FTP and Control Panel both are different thing. File Transfer Protocol is a protocol for transferring files over the web. FTP is mostly used for downloading files and uploading sites to a web server.

And cPanel (control Panel) is a graphical web-based web-hosting control panel, designed to simplify administration of websites. cPanel handles aspects of website administration in its interface. The software is distributed by cPanel Inc. and is proprietary, it is designed for use by commercial web hosting services and requires monthly license fees.

Hope this will help you to understand the thing.

All the best!

Use FTP.

Always use FTP to manage your files.

While I totally agree about using FTP to manage your files I also think that you should have a lot at cPanel functions as you can find useful tools such as statistic programs to watch site traffic, a web interface for your mail accounts, possibly the Fantastico script to directly install various softwares and more.

FTP is a file transfer protocol for exchanging and manipulating files over a TCP computer network. An FTP client may connect to an FTP server to manipulate files on that server

The FTP area deals with all the tools relating to setting up and managing FTP accounts, as well as managing FTP sessions. FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is a method by which you can transfer files between computers, usually using the Internet. There is a huge amount of information stored on FTP servers around the world that can only be accessed by using FTP. When using FTP you use an application called a "client" to connect to a machine called a "server". There are a large number of FTP software packages available. Some of them are built in to your browser (such as Internet Explorer), others are dedicated applications (such as such as CuteFTP or WS_FTP), while still others are built into web applications (File Manager in CPanel is one example). Generally speaking, if you are going to spend a lot of time using FTP or have a large amount of files to upload/download, a dedicated FTP client is the way to go.
CPanel allows you to set up FTP accounts so that certain external users can access a restricted part of your system. You can also set up an anonymous FTP account so that anyone can access a restricted part of your system. You can also manage these FTP sessions, cutting them off if they go on for too long.

If you're still there, you already got tons of recommendations.

To add from myself, i would note, that although FTP is more convenient, faster, etc., it has a serious security issue for beginners. There are times i meet really A LOT of websites infected by viruses through improper and "careless" use of FTP. If you use an FTP client, be absolutely sure, your machine is free of trojan horses and is well protected by antivirus/antispy software.

Cpanel is a web interface which usually has some protection against malicious access. FTP is kinda "raw" interface to your website.

Excellent post! Yes, be very careful of viruses with FTP, a good Free antivirus/antispy program is AVAST, which was recommended to me in another thread here on webproworld, but I do not want to get off topic here.
