I would say PHP. PHP is available for ALL platforms. ASP.NET only runs on Windows.
Most web servers are Linux with PHP installed by default. Greg Sites4All Limited Sites4All - Web Hosting & Design in Chandlers Ford, Eastleigh, Southampton, Winchester, Romsey, Hampshire, UK |

What do you mean by that? Then, I could add. C++ is even more respected, especially Borland C++ Builder 2009
But Borland is not the best on Ad. All of these languages are C inspired languages: Begin = { End = } ++, +- operators and more. If you learn C++, the rest of these C inspired languages are easy to learn. But PHP has the largest online community, is easiest to learn, has a lot of class libraries and plugins. It is said that 99 per cent of your PHP problems are already solved if you can do the relevant search. You don't need to reinvent the wheel. PHP may be good enough for more than 50 % of your online programming needs and sometimes good enough is best. php or asp.net as a career ? The answer should be, learn to program, especially in C++. |

My 1st sites where ASP, then I switched to PHP and loved it. For my personal stuff I've always used PHP, and you're correct, the learning curve is awesome. The problem is when I've gone to get a job to advance my career they are like oh, PHP, that's good you can code, but we require java experience; as if to say that PHP people are hacks or something, But then I learn a little JSP and they act like oh wow, - Java. I don't work in HR, I don't really understand why most sites are PHP but the big companies are requiring us to use the sometimes unnecessary complexities of java.
For the loving of coding, I've been very pleased with PHP, but now that I have a baby and need to make money then non-coder HR community is forcing me into the JSP class. I don't miss ASP. |

Quote:
Both PHP and ASP.NET are of equal demand in the industry. And its my person experience that if you well learnt any language its not tough for you to migrate to another one, as your logics will be clear, you would know how implementations is done the only thing you will have to learn will be the syntax and specific concepts of the new language, which does not take much time. Now for the career perspective, if the other company is bigger then the one you are working with then I would say jump to ASP.NET and if both the companies are same size and offering you the same kind of package then stick to the one you are in. Best of Luck for your Career, Cheers, |

It really depends on the career path you want to follow. Here are some very general guidelines.
If you want to work for one of the Fortune 100 companies (financial, pharma, etc.) you are better off knowing .NET. Many of these companies have systems running on JAVA and .NET, but very few (if any) in PHP. If on the other hand you wish to pursue a career in any other environment, you can go far with PHP. You will most likely develop more "current" applications instead of supporting and extending legacy code. There are some cutting edge companies and there are some "safe" companies. Ultimately, you will have to make the decision where you belong. You have a lot of choices; JAVA, .NET, PHP, RUBY, PYTHON and yes, even COBOL (if you want a nice steady paycheck). ~m |

It always makes me chuckle when I see the PHP guys suggesting that theirs is the better platform because its cross platform, cheaper and more wide spread.
The funny thing about this is who would you rather be working for anyway? The company that spends tens of thousands on server and software infrastructure or one that signs up to one of the many, many shared hosting companies run by 2 guys in a basement somewhere. Php hosting company's are everywhere because its cheap for them to set up. Now, for my suggestion... Php all the way!!! You'll get paid less, you will *probably* not ever learn as much or be as good a developer as the Java/.NET guys, but you'll likely enjoy your job more. Why? Because you will likely be working in some easy going new media company where everyone goes for drinks on a daily basis and there are even a few hot women scattered around. If you do choose the .NET route though, learn Java in parallel as there are major similarities. Oh, and avoid the WebForms framework like the plague (look at MonoRail or ASP.NT MVC). |

@southplatte - you still unemployed? You sound like you may be a decent developer. It days your location is Colorado do maybe you should just get your ass out of southpark and to a real City
Anyways, southplatte is spot on and heres the hot markets right now: Google Android (Java based) - Download the Android SDK - Android Adobe Air (Flash/Flex)- Adobe ? Adobe AIR Developer Center WCF and SilverLight (.NET)- Windows Communication Foundation IPhone (Objective C, not for the faint hearted!!)- iPhone Dev Center As for php and .NET, well you can pretty much be up and running with both of them in a few days. But to be half way decent I suggest looking at (and I mean for more than 10 mins) and learning some frameworks i.e. php: symfony | Web PHP Framework - MVC framework Doctrine - Free Open Source PHP ORM - ORM for php PHPUnit - php test framework Smarty : Template Engine - A great php template engine ASP.NET ASP.NET MVC : The Official Microsoft ASP.NET Site OR MonoRail :: Castle Project - MVC framework for .NET Download :: Castle Project - Castle Windsor IoC Container (and other goodies) hibernate.org - NHibernate for .NET - NHibernate ORM Also, if NHibernate is a bit too dry for you and you want quick and simple DAL try Active record: ActiveRecord :: Castle Project altinoren.com - ActiveWriter Introduction - And a great visual studios plugin to automate the whole thing Aside from the we side of .NET look at: Windows Mobile Developer Network - Resource for Wireless Application Development - windows mobile (quite fun) Getting Started with Windows Communication Foundation - WCF aka .NET web services and remoting framework (a bit dry but a definate requirment). Bookmark, follow link and learn. Or disregard all that I have said and spend 4 years slowly catching up |

Good resources.
I miss the Borland C++ Builder 2009 platform in your list, but you may have noted my above link. Time to repeat this thread: A soft introduction to object oriented programming.
