If you are on a Windows Pc and forget your Windows password, you can make / download (don't have the link) a Linux upstart CD from another computer to find the password
I do not know if that is possible with a BIOS password, since that is a deeper problem. Probably not, since the BIOS password comes before any OS is booted. |

Try removing your CMOS battery and it'll default back to factory settings... no password required.

For all motherboard, there is a jumper that allows you to reset the bios to default. It is near the battery. There is 3 pins where in normal state, 2 pins is already shorted with a jumper. What you need to do is to remove the jumper and short the center pin and the next pin that was not shorted in the normal state. Wait for 20 seconds or so, then remove it and short back the normal state.
That will work. I have done it for many clients. Hope this helps. Last edited by edhan; 08-12-2008 at 11:04 PM. |

Thanks for the feedback guys. The laptop in question is an IBM t61
I'll give a few of your tips a go...... watto |

Well, most of the tips are based on PC desktop. For laptop, it will be kind of hard to do the above tips as you will need to know how to open up your laptop to check. The battery mentioned is the cmos battery located on the motherboard so you will need to dis-assemble the laptop to be able to see it.
Here is a link that you can try the method: How to Bypass BIOS Passwords No guarantee though. |

The easy way on a Pc years ago was to remove the battery for some minutes. On laptops it is more complicated. Technology that I do not fully understand is more complicated today. My questions:
Data Recovery – Disk Recovery - Datarekonstruksjon The link has been on DigitalNorway: The digital revolution is transforming the world. for months.

For cmos battery, it is the internal battery (similar to watch battery - flat type) located on the motherboard. Depending on the laptop, some covers opening can view the cmos battery to remove and restore the default factory setting. If not, then you have to open up the bottom casing (need some skills as the casing is normal cache on the side - sort of like clip form).
What do you mean by 'burned' ? |

IBM Thinkpad laptops take special security precautions to protect the BIOS password. The password is encrypted in EEPROM, which prevents deletion or reset of the password through removal of the battery (I believe there is a capacitor that stores enough power to retain memory for days, if not longer) and there is no jumper to force a BIOS reset. You would need to follow a special procedure to dump the EEPROM and decrypt the password. There is a tutorial here: Service Forum :: View topic - [Tutorial] How to unlock ThinkPad supervisor password
Your best bet would probably be to bring the laptop to a local computer shop and have them reset the password though.

By "burning" I mean a form of digital fingerprint.
<side note> IBM computers are sometimes different form other computers. Years ago, my IBM PS/II had different formatting options, e.g. low level formatting. That took a least 6 hours on mine. Ordinary formatting on my Compaq computer took minutes. I did this when experimenting with Windows and OSII. Installing, deinstalling and reinstalling. <side note> |

"Low level" formatting is the actual physical formatting of the drive; "high level" or "quick" formatting is the logical formatting of an already physically formatted drive.
