Site Statistics

Greetings,
I have a site that is managed and hosted by a third party. I can only change content not backend code. I own the domain name and manage the nameservers . The service does not provide site statistics for visitors. What are my options to get precise stats, ip addresses of visitors, etc? Should I create another site I can manage, capture the traffic first and have it do redirects to the unmanaged site?
Please don't advise to get another hosting providor as this is an ASP type model and it is not option.

I think this would depend on how much control you have over the layout of the site. If you are only able to change content of the site, as far as adding text via a CMS, you will be very limited, and probably your only option would be to use a counter image to track pageviews for the various pages of the site.

If you are able to change the template of the site, you will have much more flexibility. Many of the sites I have seen that follow the model you describe allow you to change the HTML used for the header and the footer so that you can somewhat personalize the look and feel of the site. If that is the case, you should be able to put the Javascript code snippet for Google Analytics in the footer. GA requires no server side content, only a free account and a 3-5 line snippet of code on the page.

I agree with WIGE, GA is a good solution.

Jean, is correct if you have access to the logs you can get a log viewer to parse out this data. I believe AWstats will work for this, after a little modifcation.

Thanks for the suggestions, however those are not options. I may be able to convince the IT staff to drop the GA code on the homepage. I would still need a more robust solution since I will have marketing codes for the various marketing programs and would want to easily identify traffic source with marketing codes.

Does anyone have an opinion on my redirect approach?
