This actually reminded me of a program under development by Sun Microsystems called Project Looking Glass, a 3D user interface for Linux and Solaris workstations.

There is also a 3D web browser that I have experimented with a bit (mostly for the novelty) called SpaceTime, which replaces tabbed browsing with a 3D interface.
I am frequently surprised by how quite impressive technology is frequently tossed by the wayside. For example, in the late nineties, there were full 3D virtual chat environments (cybertown.com being one of the first). It is relatively simple to create 3D environments in web pages using VRML, and there were dozens of free plugins that allowed web sites to include 3D content in the early 2000s. However, despite the amazing leap in technology for the time, these technologies by and large seem to have been ignored.
