OK, I'm a VBA hacker by background having taught myself programming from scratch. I now want to move up a level to 'proper' programs. I've dabbled in learning C++ (and have some books on it) but have not learned enough where I can produce anything useful.
Because programming languages move so quick I was wondering what people have learnt recently and what they think was worthwhile. In order of preference for speed, portability and robustness (not ease of learning) I'm thinking of C++ then VB .net then Delphi. then C#. What say you? ![]()

That was actually pretty berating, mean, and uncalled for. But funny at the same time, when people laugh at any sentence that has the letters "VB" in it. Those people have no idea, the capabilities that VB* holds, I have been programming VB style code since 1998, I have seen and achieved things with VB* that have silenced and stumped some C++ jarheads. And yes, the words "Hack" and "VB" can be in the same sentence... its been proven quite a few times. Either way, I think the above post should be deleted by the submitter or a moderator :P
In response to the thread poster's question, I would start with C#, then C++, Then Delphi, then if you really needed it, VB.NET, you will notice the structure of VB.Net is starting to look more like C++ rather than a VB workspace. So, your experience from beginning to learn C# will boost and speed up your grasp of C++, and the code formatting for VB.NET is a world away from VB6 and earlier, as I stated above, it is alot more like C++ now. As for Delphi, I just think it would be more beneficial than VB.Net, but thats just my opinion. |

Open source, cross platform, wtite apps, network stuff, everything. OOP, gui programming enviornment (netbeans) that is free, excellent, and has plug-in modules to convert to C++ Welcome to NetBeans Quote:
If only windows, .net languages like VB and C#, but IDEes for these cost money. You might be able to get VB Express for free, MS used to have that download. |

directly jump to C#, you do not have to take a specific route.

In Visual Studio there are 25 to 30 ways of saying "Hello World".
In HTML, "Hello World" will suffice. In PHP, <?php echo "Hello World"; ?> will suffice. If you want to think about things like the various uses of strongly-typed languages - I would suggest C#. If you prefer to think about getting your application completed in the least amount of time - I would suggest HTML and non-object-oriented PHP. I just finished an ASP.NET application dealing with encryption using C#. I completed the same project in PHP in one hour. I got paid close to $1,000 for the C# version. YES, I love C# for some applications! As long as they are not mine! |
