Default SharePoint as a Portal

We are looking at using SharePoint as a company portal and while it is good in that it is cheap (free), there are many areas where it is somewhat weak. One such area is image or document management. Has anyone out there successfully integrated another solution into SharePoint to better manage a wider variety of formats? I would be interested in knowing what software you selected and how it is used generally speaking.

Thank you-
Steve

I take it by portal, you will be using Sharepoint internally only?

What extra capabilities are you looking for as far as document management? I have been able to store a wide variety of document types on my company Sharepoint site without any issues, although I did need to do a bit of hacking to add appropriate icons based on file type.

Initially, SharePoint will be for internal users but eventually, we may branch out for customers, suppliers, etc. As you know, SharePoint accomodates Microsoft documents with no problems as well as some image formats. Outside of that, issues can arise. For example, sharing collected Indesign layouts, photoshop files, etc. I remember seeing some solutions that actually allow you to look at upload a Powerpoint presentation and the person can actually rearrange the slides online before downloading "their" presentation. I hope this helps more.
