Default Changing Mulitiple files with DOS rename?

Need a little help, as I am trying to rename a series of files all at one time using dos, and the rename "ren" syntax, but having trouble.

I have a bunch of jpg's in a folder like:

cocoa-beach-park-1.jpg
cocoa-beach-park-1-big.jpg
cocoa-beach-park-2.jpg
cocoa-beach-park-2-big.jpg
etc.....

Say I want to change them all with one command to:

newname-1.jpg
newname-1-big.jpg
newname-2.jpg
newname-2-big.jpg
etc.....

I tried this: ren cocoa-beach-park*.* newname*.*

But does not do it. Anyone know dos well and can tell me the correct command?

Thanks a bunch, Stuart

use:

ren cocoa-beach-park*.jpg newname*.jpg

With two * in each filename, DOS doesn't know what to do.

No, that does not work. That results in:

newnameach-1.jpg
newnameach-1-big.jpg

It puts newname in the first seven characters, but left "ach", the last three characters in cocoa-be"ach".

Any other ideas? Thanks for suggestions.

I recently had this problem with 400 images, and I just used the free program @ http://www.bulkrenameutility.co.uk

I know you want to use the dos rename, but this utility made things much easier and gave me more options.
