Building my own dircetory and search engine?

My website is in a niche area and I am wanting to build a complimentary web directory/search engine however am overloaded with the options availalable. I am only capable (if that is the word) at doing light mods to any software so is anyone able to provide me some advice on suitable package software that I can drop straight in and has Dummies type installation instructions?
