Default Protect Code

I am trying to determine the best way to protect PHP sourcecode, and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions?

I've seen products like PHP Lockit!, do you know if programs like that actually work?

I use http://www.ioncube.com/ it requires a loader be installed via php.ini or dynamically loaded.

Seems most reputable hosts will install the latest loader when asked by a client.
