Difference between IRC and phpmychat

Hi,

This probably isn't the right forum to post this in but I didn't see one that fit any better.

Can someone tell me the difference between IRC and programs like phpmychat, entropychat, etc. and why many hosts will not allow IRC chats.

As far as I know, if you install phpmychat, entropychat you are limited to a single thread, Ok with most servers. Is not IRC a multi-thread system?
