Default Internet Explorer Question - opening .php files for editing.

Not sure if this is the most suitable forum for asking this question but I will anyway.

I have just bought a new pc and am trying to modify my web pages. It was straightforward on my old pc - just click on the relevant .php file on the hard disk, the Internet Explorer browers would open and I would just go to View - Source to edit the page.

On the new PC when I go to open the file from the hard disk - nothing. I have registered .php files to be open with internet explorer There is a slight pause but the file doesn't open up. I looked in the help, searched online but am feeling really dumb.

All I can think of is there is some kind of compatibility issue - .html files open ok. If I open the .php with notepad then the code is there but I just can't view the webpage.

The old pc was Windows 2000 and the new one runs XP. Both are using Internet Explorer 6.0 (the old one with update SP1, the new one with SP2).

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Regards
Richard

PHP files cannot be opened by browsers because they can only display HTML. You need to have the PHP page served up by a web server so it can parse the PHP and generate the HTML if you wish to view it in a web browser.

Agreed, you could install a web server on your machine.

Thanks for the replies - not sure I understand them but fixed the problem I was having by adjusting one of the security check boxes in the Advanced section of I.E options. Can now open and view the .php files as before.

Cheers
Richard
