Default Dreamweaver - index.html

I need help if anyone knows how. When I try to open any index.html either on the secure or non secure site, It opens a screen and says restrited area. I can't find anyone who knows how to turn that setting off. I know you should be able to open those files, because at our tech center, we can. I have had the program about a yr. and it has been like that since the begining, so it had to have come that way. Do anyone of you know how to change the setting? If I am to open up these files to make changes, I now have to use an FTP program, can anyone help? Joy

Hi Joy,

I had a look at http://www.cubbyholecreations.com/index.html which I assumed would be the site where you were having problems, but the page opened without the screen you mentioned.

If it is another website you are having a problem with. Also you say you can open it from your "tech center", have you tried form various computers, or just the two places. Perhaps it is the setting of the computer that has the warning, and not the site...

Either way, it seems to me that Dreamweaver is likely not the cause of the problem. If there is a restricted area on your web site it would be something to do with the site setup and admin.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Maybe some helpful techie who has seen the same glitch elsewhere will drop by!

How did you setup your remote site? Are you logging on thru DW with FTP? How do you log on?

It may be a couple of things.

Yes, it sounds like you are trying to access remote files and edit them directly.
These files may be either cloaked, or you do not have check out status enabled through the 'master' Dreamweaver that was used to create the site.
We need to know more info.
Is it only files named 'index.html', in other words, can you open any other files with an '.html' extension? You can find out more in "Dreamweaver HELP", for instance:
Quote:
Setting the Site Definition Wizard Sharing Files options

The purpose of this dialog box is to set up the Dreamweaver file Check In/Check Out system, if you’re working in a collaborative environment (or working alone, but on multiple machines).
And if any mods see this we could stand being moved the "Web Programming" section.

Joy, you may want to post this question there also. We have a guy named Ranjan who is an expert on using dreamweaver and he regularily answers questions in that section.

I think it is because I had the benefit of jurgen's post (" Are you logging on thru DW with FTP?") on my set of scales.

But thanks, Tania!

I am sorry if I posted this in the wrong section, I am new to all of this and didn't realize, sorry. I don't remmber turning anything on in check in check out, but will check that out, :) I can access all my htmls except the index.htmls, and I can't get into edit anything (index.htmls) in Dreamweaver. It just comes up and says restricted area when I click to open them. Know one can seem to find out what is wrong, and I am very new to Dreamweaver. I did not build my site, I am trying to take it all over myself, and learn, and there is so much to learn. I have had a Dreamweaver class, and still can't figure some of this out yet. I don't know how I conect in Dreamweaver, I set up the Dreamweaver my self, but it is not ftp conections I use on Dreamweaver, am sorry I don't know what it is called. I have to use an ftp program seperate form Dreamweaver to do some editing, (index.html) on my home page. I am so thankfull for this site, I found it the other day, and I hope no one minds me asking so many questions here, I am sure I will have more as I try to get this up and running well. Joy

Joy, you have done absolutely nothing wrong! You are in the right place to get all the help you want, any which way you find to ask. So, please, everybody, never be afraid to ask!

I will take some pictures of my Dreamweaver so I can ask exactly what you see in certain area's.
I, to, found Dreamweaver very perplexing at first, but am sure glad I stuck with it.

I'll be back in a bit.

Default Opening Pages?

Just a qucky really.

I came across a similar problem that was related to my antivirus program. (Norton)

If you have an anti virus, whichever, if it has the ability to bar sites you may ahve inadvertantly blocked a lot of sites through child lock etc.

Check your settings on your anti-virus software.

I had to play around because some sites that were indvertently getting blocked because some of the phrases used were being blocked because of the strictness of the program.

It may be worth a try, otherwise there should be no reason why you cannot access index.htm, shtm etc.

Joy,

Let's start here, first thing first.....
Can you download your index.html file from your server to your hard drive??

BTW: Mik have a look at the code..... Joy, whoever made your webpage did NOT know what he/she is doing..... :-)

If you can download the file please do so, and try to open (offline) in dreamwaver. Does it work??

Is it the index page of your main page? Most likely you will have another index page within your shopping cart. This is a totaly different file and will only be called through the commerce.cgi script.

And btw, I would not change anything on any pages while being online. Unless you are very certain what you are doing. Try to work on your pages offline (download and edit) and upload the new pages to your server after you made sure they are what you want.

FTP works great for me.

Let us know, one way or the other we all will try to make it work.

Joy, I just checked on my side. Do you have a html-template directory in your 'shopping cart'? This index file gives me the same result "restricted area"....

Most likely this is the file you are trying to open. But this is not the index file you are looking for... :-)

Default Problem solved!

I don't have the same shopping cart program you have Jurgen, mine is commerce cgi, written by Larry Wagner. The index.html I was trying to open, should have opened, it did on a friends computer, and I can open it in contribute. ronniethedoger sugested moving all but my check out files from the cgi site, and put them on my local site, I did, and can easily access my index.html files. I also moved from no show in google, to 5 places, in the top listings, 1-5. I have not had a chance to look through all of my keywords to see if I am listed any where else yet. I am going to fine tune my keywords a little more, before I am done. Thank you guys for trying to help me, It was corrected when I transfered my files like ronniethedoger said. Joy
